A 25-year-old New Zealander has told a court in China he mistook the meth he's accused of buying for a muscle-building supplement.

Peter Gardner, who also has Australian citizenship, was detained in the southern city of Guangzhou on Nov. 8 when police said he was trying to smuggle more than 30 kilograms (66 pounds) of methamphetamine out of China. Gardner could face the death penalty if convicted.

The trial in Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court was broadcast live on a court website, but Gardner's testimony in English was barely, if at all, audible. A court interpreter gave an audible translation in Chinese.

A 22-year-old Australian woman arrested with him has been released.

According to this article Peter Gardiner has been sentenced to death in China for drug smuggling, but I can't find any information if the sentence have been executed or not.
