Since March 26, 2026, there has been no trace of 28-year-old Hugo HUYGHEBAERT, who was in China at the time.

Around 11:00 a.m., he left the “Haba Xiyinge” guesthouse, located in the Sanba township of Shangri-La in Yunnan Province, intending to go hiking in Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Hugo is 5’11” tall and slender. He has short, brown, wavy hair and a beard. He was wearing gray hiking clothes and carrying a backpack covered with a green cover.

To assist their Belgian and Chinese colleagues, the police are asking anyone who has seen Hugo, had contact with him, or will be in the area soon and can provide a statement, to come forward.

Here's a recent hiking guide to the gorge. It has some pretty dramatic terrain, not someplace for a novice. Hopefully he's an experienced higher altitude hiker. (The popular High Trail sits at roughly 2,600–2,700 meters (8,500–8,800 ft), From the article it sounds like it's not a short trek so I'm hoping he just proceeded further than expected and is out of contact.

Article from 4 April 2026:
Speaking to Sébastien Prohpète and Gaëtan Delhaye, David Rimaux, commissioner of the missing persons unit of the federal police, provided further information. "Hugo left six months ago to trek through various countries in the region," he said. "He traveled through China, Russia, and Mongolia, and was finishing his trip in China because he had really enjoyed his first visit there.
