It's stated her brother in law found her body. He had some run ins with the law that kind of raises some questions in my mind. He was accused of abusing his wife and ended up killing her and her Mother in law. It doesn't mean he was involved in Jessica's death, but it does raise questions.

[Darrell Burklund, 72, a former maintenance worker, was arrested on March 14 in York, Nebraska, in connection with the murder of 25-year-old mother Jessica Bejarano, CBI said. He has been booked on a single count of second-degree murder.

CBI: Man arrested on suspicion of homicide of young mom

After nearly 18 years, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation announced the arrest of a man
on suspicion of the 2007 homicide of 25-year-old mother Jessica Bejarano.
Darrell Burklund, 72, a former maintenance worker, was arrested Friday in York, Nebraska.
He has been booked on a single count of second-degree murder, according to a news
release.
“The Frederick Police Department would like to thank all agencies involved for their
dedication in this case to seeking justice and closure for the family of Jessica Bejarano,”
Frederick Police Chief Todd Norris said in the release.
CBI officials said Frederick police responded to a call April 6, 2007, at a residence in the
7900 block of Larkspur Circle, where they discovered Bejarano’s body in the bathroom with
a stab wound to her chest.
At the time of the incident, her 4-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son were present in the
home, according to the release.
Initially, investigators looked at various suspects, including the victim’s husband, who was
later cleared as he was determined to be at work during the time of the crime, the release
said.

Investigators ultimately obtained DNA evidence that “subsequently yielded a potential
match to (Burklund),” the release said. On Friday, investigators conducted a follow-up
interview with Burklund.
Following the interview, Burklund was arrested and taken into custody at the York County
Sheriff’s Detention Center in York.
“We are grateful for the diligent and hard work of the CBI and its cold case team,” Cece
Merrow, Bejarano’s mother, said in the release, adding: “We never gave up hope. Chris
Schaefer, who was on Jessica’s case from day one, made a promise that he would not retire
until Jessica’s case was solved ... There were so many twists and turns in her case, but we
always had faith in the CBI.”
Officials said Burklund was 54 years old at the time of the homicide and is now 72.
Burklund will face an extradition hearing Wednesday before he can be transported back to
Colorado to face charges, according to the release.
CBI Director Chris Schaefer was one of the original CBI agents assigned to the case in 2007,
according to the release.
“This arrest is the culmination of years of tireless work by our investigators for the
unwavering pursuit of justice for Jessica Bejarano and her family,” Schaefer said in the
release.
“I want to remind the victims’ families to never give up hope. No matter how old or
complicated these cases are, our cold case team is dedicated to resolving the most difficult
cases no matter how long it takes.”
The CBI “extends its gratitude” to Frederick police, the 19th Judicial District Attorney’s
Office, Nebraska State Patrol and the York County Sheriff’s Office in Nebraska, whose
“assistance was instrumental throughout this investigation,” the release said.
The charge against Burklund is an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent
unless proven guilty in court, the release said.

[Burkland told investigators he knew Bejarano's husband wasn't home when he knocked on her door the morning of the murder. He said the two argued, she scratched him, and he "lost it," stabbing her once.

Burkland wrote a note to Bejarano's daughter after he confessed, apologizing for stabbing and killing her mother.

"Hello my name is Darrell Burkland," he wrote. "I'm the man who took your mother's life 18 yrs. ago. An accident and bad judgement on my part robbed your family [of] the most important person in your life.
