SAGUACHE COUNTY, Colo. — Search and rescue crews are searching for a missing 41-year-old hiker in the Sangre de Cristo mountains on Monday.

Saguache County authorities received a report about the overdue climber on Sunday. The man, Luis Corkern, had been climbing Challenger Point and Kit Carson Peak, which are two 14,000-plus-foot peaks fairly close to each other east of Crestone.

According to reports, authorities learned Corkern had ascended Kit Carson via the north ridge route on Saturday and summited around 4 p.m. He had plans to descend using the Challenger Peak summit and taking the standard route back to Willow Lake and down to the parking lot.

According to Custer County Search and Rescue, Luis Corkern, a 41-year-old, was reported to have ascended Kit Carson via the north ridge route on Saturday, July 9th, making the summit at approximately 4 p.m. He planned to descend via the Challenger Point summit and the standard route but has not returned to his vehicle at the trailhead.

At the time he was ascending there wasn't anything significant on the radar. To get the time and radar map for Saturday the 9th when he was supposed to ascend, go to the menu on the left of the page for date and time under "national reflectivity mosaic" and hit "update map" when you have the date and time you want and then click on the "base map" icon on the right menu bar and click on " boundary selection" which will put in the state lines which helps hone in on the area he was at.
