CO CO - Margaret 'Margo' Hillman, 14, Lyons, 24 Sept 1983

  • #61
I have run one of the suspect's names and am getting:
1st degree sexual assault in 1987
3rd degree sexual assault in 1985
2nd degree kidnapping in 1987

*I am looking for something confirming the names of the suspects so I can legally post more.
Where these charges or was this suspect ever convicted of these crimes? In the 80s, it would’ve been too early for widespread DNA testing. If this person has been convicted of a crime more recently, their DNA would have been taken. Perhaps now this family would have less political power in town. The fact that they have a DNA, and suspects, would lead one to believe that that DNA have been tested against those suspects. But perhaps back then that family was too powerful. Maybe not now?

"Margaret Hillman, 14 years of age, disappeared late in the evening of September 24th, 1983, after attending a party at the Heil Ranch, located northwest of Boulder in Lefthand Canyon. Her disappearance remained a mystery until the following summer, when her skeletal remains were discovered in a shallow grave at the Ranch on July 17th, 1984. Her clothing was found buried next to the body.
Two men figured as suspects in the case, but no arrests were ever made. There is a potential for DNA analysis of evidence that was recovered at the grave. The case remains Open."

Harold "Nicky" Nicholson's murder has been solved -- but Boulder County still has fourteen cold homicide cases that haven't heated up yet

It's the "neatly folded" that's screaming at me.

BBM
The clothes were neatly folded, but also "buried next to the body". The buried part could be a good thing as it would have protected any touch DNA from the elements. That is assuming that the clothing evidence has been stored properly.

I find it interesting that her remains were found in the area so near where she disappeared...and that they area would have already been searched. If she were buried, wouldn't the ground have been disturbed? If a large boulder was placed on top of her burial site, one that required moving equipment, wouldnt that hav been noticed or heard? I would think someone on the property would have noticed.
Were no dogs used to search for her?

From the Longmont Daily Times-Call 10/6/99Crime canyon
by Greg Avery
Daily Times-Call

"*LONGMONT — In the space of a month, detectives twice taped off
portions of the scenic canyon to investigate a brutal crime.

* *Juxtaposed against its beautiful twisting geography cut by Lefthand
Creek, the crimes seemed especially heinous — gang rape and murder.

* *But the Aug. 29 and Sept. 26 incidents were hardly the first in
Lefthand Canyon, nor were they unusually brutal for its recent history.

* *On Sept. 26, a couple looking for landscaping material discovered
24-year-old Natalie Mirabal's strangled and decapitated body near a
short turn-off in the canyon west of Longmont.

* *Twenty-eight days earlier, a 2 hour gang rape took place at the
canyon's Ponderosa Park picnic area.

* *The 20-year-old woman, kidnapped and raped by six men, was dropped
off a mile down the canyon, left to wander shoeless in the dark for
help.

* *The incidents only add to Lefthand's dark mystique."

Snip

"* *In 1978, a teen-age girl, Christine Jones, was raped and murdered in
the same gulch, a crime that remains unsolved and whose file is still
active.

* *In September 1982, 14-year-old Margaret Hillman disappeared from a
barn dance in Lefthand Canyon. Forest Service workers doing a timber
survey on Heil Ranch just north of the canyon found her body nearly a
year later, buried in a stream bed with her clothes neatly folded next
to her.

* *Higher up the canyon in 1987, about five miles east of Ward, someone
strangled Longmont 27-year-old Carol Murphy. Sheriff's detectives
believe they know who killed her, but never had enough evidence to make
an arrest.

* *A slew of other violent crimes like rapes and assaults have been
reported over the years.

* *It's location seems to be the reason.

* *"It's pretty accessible but it still feels remote," Epp said.

* *Lefthand Canyon Drive is a county road, not a state highway like the
roads up Boulder and South St. Vrain canyons.

* *It's traffic volumes are much lighter and housing developments
sparse and far from the roads making it feel farther from prying eyes
than it looks on a map.

* *For someone quickly seeking a secluded spot to commit a crime or
leave a body, it seems ideal, said Boulder police investigations Cmdr.
Joe Pelle, a former Sheriff's deputy who lives in Longmont and has more
than two decades in law enforcement experience here. Lefthand's
connection to the North Foothills Highway gives it high-speed access
from Boulder and Longmont.

* *But grisly crime is hardly the exclusive domain of Lefthand Canyon.

* *To Pelle, Boulder Canyon also evokes memories of death — three
children kidnapped and found near Barker Reservoir, two of them killed —
*as does St. Vrain Canyon west of Lyons."

Yes those Boys seem to have had quite a past......

I am trying to find if there were ever “official” suspects named , so that some “official” sleuthing may take place.

I submitted Margarets case to Cold Justice. There wasn't much room to submit details of the case. I am sure they research that all themselves. Also, the police have to be willing to let them help. Hopefully that will be so. Hopefully someone will get back to me and I will let you know

Hmm I previously posted that Margo and Christine might have the same killer but after reading more of what you posted I think that Margo was absolutely killed by someone at that party. I guess there's a possibility that whoever killed Margo happened upon Christine in Lefthand canyon which could be likely if Margo's killer was still living in the area, but I feel like whoever killed Margo may not be a serial killer but someone who raped her and panicked. Was Margo found on Heil property?

ETA: Just realized that Christine was killed 6 years before Margo so never mind I'm sure they have different killers because I think Margo's killer was a teenager and wouldn't have been old enough to kill Christine in 1977.

Guys, I’m really wondering about perp DNA here. I’d like to know if this has been pursued recently in this new magical world of DNA we live in.

Is Margo’s case still actively being worked, or is all the evidence sitting in a dusty box....

I would hope that the evidence in her case, clothing, etc was well preserved. A lot could be done with her case given the advancements in DNA, touch DNA, etc. Add a little Parabon Labs magic, and who knows what could happen. If there were abnormalities with the investigation, due to high profile folks involved in theory, could be difficult. Would love to see this worked on. Seems a very solvable case IMO

bumping for Margo. With so many advances in DNA, and so many cases being solved lately I’m hoping this gets a fresh look from the authorities

@jewelsmac thanks for bumping Margo’s thread. Really a shame that there seems to be so little interest from LE, the media and online sleuths. I know it was back in 1983, but other than the rather generic “don’t jump to conclusions” account of the discovery of Margo’s body that can be read on “find-a-grave”, there basically is no info out there. No mention on other sites..

A couple of old now-paywalled articles by a local media outlet / paper essentially keep Margo’s story out of the limelight. What happened? What is happening? Nothing I guess..

Only 50 people at the barn party - and all were supposedly interviewed. Surely there were POI’s. What LE organization investigated the case, and what were their capabilities? Did the state ever get involved?

Other than Margo’s obit, there are almost no results mentioning Margo’s case in recent internet searches

Was there DNA? Seems there had to have been if her clothes were found (folded? idk) nearby. Is this a case that needs funding for forensic genetic genealogy? Does @othram know about this one?

Maybe I’m missing something, but the fact that the post before your recent bump was 4 years ago - with no others posts by other WS’ers in between - speaks to how little interest there has been - not just by WS’ers, but by LE and the media (which often prompts WS interest).

The murder of a 14 year old girl. How very sad. RIP Margo
