The Marion County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) said on Saturday, March 25, at 10:50 a.m., deputies conducted a welfare check on 59-year-old Timothy Floyd Smith, after he didn't show up to work the day before. When they arrived to his home in Citrus Park and made entry into the residence — they discovered Smith's body.

Investigators said Smith appeared to have suffered a violent attack before his death. Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit responded to initiate a homicide investigation.

At this time, the sheriff's office said Smith left work at around 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 23. That was the last time he was seen alive.

“My detectives have been working around the clock to investigate this brutal murder and what we have learned so far now leads us to believe that it was committed by somebody who the victim knew," Sheriff William Woods said. "Somebody out there knows something. No piece of evidence or bit of information is insignificant. If you know something that may help advance this investigation, please pick up the phone and call us.”

Thank you for starting this thread. I’m curious if anyone has found an actual address where police responded? I grew up in this neighborhood and have many mutual friends with Tim. By all accounts a gem of a human being.

Looking at VoterRecords Tim’s family address is about a mile or two south of where the welfare check was done. I wonder why a welfare check was needed at a home other than his family home.

I know I would have liked Tim a lot, had I known him. I am so sad for his family, patients and friends, he was a treasure, and they will miss him terribly. A pox on the perpetrator of this crime, and swift justice.

I agree. I researched his social media - he has many friends and loved ones that want answers. I keep wondering if this is a hate crime.

From the Marion County Sherriff’s Office Facebook page: Marion County Sheriff's Office

ENHANCED REWARD OF UP TO $9,500 IS BEING OFFERED FOR HELPFUL INFORMATION ABOUT TIMOTHY SMITH’S MURDER

Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MSCO) Major Crimes detectives continue to investigate the March 2023 murder of 59-year-old Timothy Floyd Smith and are seeking information that may help bring his killer(s) to justice.

Many of you have asked for updates on the status of this investigation and here is what we can tell you. At this time, Herbert Swilley, the victim’s spouse, is considered a suspect in Timothy’s murder. Detectives spoke with Mr. Swilley at the earliest stages of the investigation and they have been trying to speak with him again, but his attorney has indicated that he will only cooperate if he is provided with immunity from prosecution for Timothy’s murder. Jordan Swilley, Herbert’s daughter, is considered a person of interest. She, too, gave a preliminary statement but has declined to speak to detectives further.

Because Herbert and Jordan won’t speak with the detectives investigating Timothy’s murder about evidence that has been uncovered during the investigation, we are hoping that there are people in this community who may know things that could help us solve this case. This could include information regarding Timothy’s activities in the days and weeks leading up to his death, or information about Timothy and Herbert’s relationship. If you know anything that might help investigators – even if it seems unimportant – please call us and let us know. It may be the piece of the puzzle we need.

If you have any information, please call Detective Daniel Pinder at (352) 368-3508 or the Marion County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number of (352) 732-9111. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers of Marion County at (352) 368-STOP (7867) and reference 23-21 in your tip.

In addition to the $3,000 reward offered by Crime Stoppers of Marion County, an enhanced reward of up to $6,500 is available through the Florida Association of Crime Stoppers, in partnership with the Florida Office of the Attorney General. The additional monies are available through June 30, 2024. The anonymous tip MUST come through the Crime Stoppers program to be eligible for the additional funds. This is the MAXIMUM award that can be provided to an anonymous tipster.

Wow. I can't say I'm surprised, but it isn't how I thought this case was going. I'm so glad LE has been working the case all along. RIP Tim. May there be justice for your brutal death.

Marion County Sheriff’s officials say Smith’s husband Herbert Swilley and Swilley’s daughter Jordan are both persons of interest in the murder, which was described by MCSO officials as “violent.” Public Information Officer Zach Moore says Swilley’s lawyer is advising the two not to speak to detectives.

Snip

After months of investigating, MCSO has yet to make an arrest, but on Tuesday, the sheriff’s office announced a new development in the case – Smith’s husband, Herbert Swilley, who raised thousands of dollars after Smith was killed, is now considered a suspect in the murder.

MCSO said Swilley’s daughter, Jordan, also gave a preliminary statement but has “declined to speak to detectives further.”

A hate crime? It was his gay husband who killed him.

I’m not sure it would be classified as a hate crime by the husband. However, it could be classified as a hate crime by the daughter, depending on her level of involvement.
