TXDPS - September 18, 2017 DPS Offers Increased Reward, Seeks Leads in 1988 Jones County Murder

"On September 2, 1988, 7-year-old Cortney Clayton was abducted from near her home in Stamford, approximately 40 miles north of Abilene. The young girl was last seen when she walked to a small store, about a block from her home, to buy a soft drink. Despite an immediate and extensive search, the second grader's remains were not discovered until March 26, 1989, by a hunter in Shackelford County, about 50 miles away near the small town of Moran. She was identified by the hair from a hairbrush her parents had kept. She is survived by her parents and two brothers."

There is absolutely no prior information on this case. From a missing person to murder, I can find nothing before 2015 that talks about this case. Anything found through links no longer work. How can a case be this cold? The more I search, and the more I don't find, the more intrigued I get. I can't stop looking, but I need help. There is only so much one person can do.

So, I result to this. A great community to help me find ANYTHING about this case, nothing surprises me anymore. I will take any information even if it is just a personal theory. Her parents and family are still actively waiting for any news. Let's give it to them.

Cortney Clayton
September 1988

Cortney Clayton had begged her father to let her go to the store in Stamford, a small town in West Texas, to buy something to drink. She was only 7 years old, but the store was only about a block away. It was a walk she’d made many times before, and her father watched her as she quickly made her way to the store and walked inside to purchase a soda. Her older brother Ryan showed up several minutes later to walk her home, but she was nowhere to be found. Only the can of soda she’d recently purchased remained sitting on the back of the store manager’s vehicle. Her body was found six months later in a field about 50 miles south of Stamford.
