Reward Increased in East Hartford Cold Case

Her body was discovered just after 8 a.m. on Oct. 13, 1973 in her Cannon Road apartment and officials are hoping a new infusion of cash and interviews with “persons of interest” will lead them to her killer.

'East Hartford police said a major breakthrough came through in 2021 when Avon police arrested Legere for kidnapping a woman in a separate 1984 cold case. Legere had also been an early suspect for Couture’s murder, but insufficient evidence at the time prevented charges.

Avon police’s arrest of Legere assisted East Hartford police with uncovering additional cold cases dating back to the 1960’s involving Legere assaulting women, which showed “disturbing similarities” to Couture’s murder.'

I searched, and could not find a post on this man.

He kidnapped an Avon Ct woman as she was getting into her car putside of her apartment, bound and blindfolded her.

"The man drove the victim in her vehicle to an unknown location, tied her to a tree, and began to beat and sexually assault her, according to testimony. He then forced her back inside her car, where he continued to force her to perform sex acts."

Then he drove her back to a parking lot and left her still bound. She honked the horn until help arrived.

DNA led authorities to arrest a 75-year-old Springfield man in a cold case kidnapping from 1984.

Legere, formerly of Windsor, Conn., went to the University of California, Los Angeles and has a master’s degree in computer science, the Associated Press reported. His criminal record stretches back to the 1960s and includes arrests and convictions in more than 30 criminal cases, including other convictions for sexual assault, kidnapping and negligent homicide

A break in the case came when Avon police arrested Legere in 2021 for kidnapping a woman in a separate 1984 cold case.

At the time, Legere was an early suspect in Couture’s murder, but there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him with a crime.

Avon’s arrest of Legere also help East Hartford police connect him to additional closed cases dating back to the 1960s that shared disturbing similarities to Couture’s murder.
