A judge revealed Wednesday what he called a disturbing motive behind the murder of Matthew Chew as he walked home from work in New London Oct. 29.

Six teens appeared in court Wednesday to face various charges in connection with the murder.

Reading from a sealed arrest warrant, Judge Kevin McMahon said the group beat Chew to death for "no reason" other than "because they were bored", according to a report in The Day of New London.

Matthew Chew had just left work at a restaurant and was walking home when he was attacked. He lived less than a tenth of a mile away from the restaurant.

In a probable cause hearing that concluded Monday, Judge Patrick J. Clifford ruled that the state had presented enough evidence to prosecute 17-year-old Idris Elahi for murder.

Elahi is charged with fatally stabbing Chew with a folding knife after he and five other New London teenagers hatched a plan to go downtown and jump somebody on Oct. 29, 2010. Chew had clocked out of his cook's job at 2Wives Brick Oven Pizza a short time earlier. He lived less than a tenth of a mile away on Washington Street.

An 18-year-old man has entered the first plea in the 2010 murder of a young chef and DJ.

Idris Elahi, of 20 Home Street, entered an Alford plea to murder on Wednesday in the New London Superior Court. The action changes his former not guilty plea and accepts a state offer to serve 35 years in prison.

Elahi is one of six defendants charged with involvement in the fatal stabbing of 25-year-old Matthew Chew as he was walking from his workplace at 2 Wives Pizza to his Huntington Street apartment on the evening of Oct. 30, 2010.

The Alford plea means that Elahi does not agree with the entirety of the state allegations but recognizes that the state would be likely to prevail at trial. His attorney, Bruce McIntyre, said Elahi disagreed with language in the charge saying that he intended to cause death.

After a week of impact statements and final words from the state and defense, the final defendant in the 2010 murder of Matthew Chew was sentenced on Friday.

Marquis Singleton, 19, will serve 16 years in prison, suspended after eight years, with five years of probation...

Rashad and Matias [Perry]—both 19 and unrelated—also accepted a state offer to plead to first-degree manslaughter. They were sentenced this week to serve 20 years in prison, suspended after 15 years, with five years of probation.
