"Mentally disabled" could mean any number of conditions, and then from there, any range of severity. I really wish they were more specific.

Salvatore suffered from scarlet fever as a 10 year old, thus his mental age did not progress past this age.

Lots of info here: Italian man arrives in Middletown in 1966, goes missing within 2 months

<<Salvatore Rafala was 24 years old when he arrived in Middletown, thousands of miles away from Sicily, Italy.

While he spoke very little English, he got a job at Laura’s Fashion Shop on Pease Avenue. He lived with his parents, Carmelo and Lucia Rafala, who had been in the United States for about six months.

But one November morning in 1966 – Nov. 4, to be exact – the Rafalas woke up in the middle of the night and realized Salvatore was missing. He had apparently left the family's Spring Street home without his shoes or a jacket.>>

<<Some say Salvatore was mentally disabled. Family members attributed him being “a little slow” to a high fever he suffered when he was about 10 years old, Marco Rafala wrote in his essay about his missing uncle and how it affected his family.>>

<<But he was also homesick, and had asked his father multiple times if he could go back to Italy.

Carmelo Rafala, Salvatore’s father, asked his son to stay in Middletown for two more months while they saved up money for a plane ticket back to Italy. Shortly thereafter, Salvatore disappeared.>>

Written by Marco Rafala, Salvatore's uncle

Salvatore's brother's obituary-Salvatore is listed as missing

<<His brother, Salvatore, has been missing since 1966. >>
