Town of Groton Police Dept update, April 7

The Town of Groton Police Department is aware of several social media posts that have raised concern within our community. We would like to share the following information to help clarify the situation and address those concerns.

Our detectives continue their efforts to locate Steven Joseph Gush. Extensive searches along Route 184 have been conducted using our Drone Unit, Search and Rescue K-9 Teams, and divers from the Connecticut State Police. Their assistance has been invaluable in covering areas with limited accessibility and eliminating certain locations from focus, allowing our detectives to concentrate on other leads. We have remained in close and consistent contact with Mr. Gush’s family, who have also organized independent search efforts. We remain hopeful that our ongoing investigation will lead to positive developments.

We are also aware of a report of a suspicious male observed at Bluff Point State Park last week. We are working in coordination with the Connecticut Environmental Conservation Police, who have primary jurisdiction over this matter. They have been in contact with the reporting party, and our department will continue to support their investigation as needed.

Regarding references circulating on social media about incidents in the State of Rhode Island, we currently have no information connecting those events to any of the incidents in Groton. While we understand the concern, it is important to note that many of the claims on social media are speculative. We encourage residents to refer to verified local news sources for factual reporting on these matters.

While we have no evidence at this time linking these incidents, we always urge the public to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. If you observe suspicious activity or witness a crime, please report it to the appropriate local authorities. In the event of an emergency, call 9-1-1.
If you have any information that may assist in locating Steven Joseph Gush, please contact us at 860-441-6712.

We appreciate your continued concern and hope this update provides clarity and reassurance.

Was this a planned hike?

Also, is it common to leave your cell phone in your car when hiking? (I don’t hike so I have no clue.)

Circumstances of Disappearance
Left his car at the entrance of a state trail area in Groton, Ct. left his wallet and phone behind and has not been seen since.

Town and State searches have been done with both dogs and drones. Divers went into the ponds in the area searching for him. Nothing found.

His vehicle was located at the CANDLEWOOD HILL WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA on Route 184 in Groton

If you look up Candlewood Hill Wildlife Management it links up to other open recreation spaces like Copp Family Park and Avery Hills Nature Preserve and further north. There are also bodies of water in those recreational areas.

IMO, most likely he went hiking and had a medical incident or it was suicide. Leaving phone and wallet in the car while taking a hike does not seem unusual imo.

As far as Bluff Point, that is south of I-95 and Route 1. Candlewood Hill Wildlife Management is North of I-95 and Route 1. He would have had to cross those two busy roads at some point. There are only so many bridges or overpasses to go south and cross down I-95. IMO he did not go south.
