Most GBI investigations are lengthy, officials say
By Travis Highfield Posted Jan 23, 2016
''Death cases are particularly time-consuming because the investigation can lead agents in virtually any direction. Assistant Special Agent in Charge Steve Foster used the 1992 death of David Bertsche in Taliaferro County as an example. Bertsche was an accountant with Southern Co. and was found with his throat cut. His death remains unsolved.

“There’s a personal life angle, there is a personal relationship angle, there is a corporate angle and there is the random angle,” Foster said, adding that the case file is about five volumes thick. “It’s like that with unknown homicides. You have a dead victim and you have no idea who the killer is. People only kill for certain reasons.

“What we’ll do on an old cold case like that is occasionally review it to see what in the case could be followed up on now that wasn’t followed up on back then.”

Sometimes there’s another person who could be interviewed, Foster said. Recently, he was able to use the latest in DNA testing technology to eliminate a possible suspect in the Bertsche case.''
