Missing From: Interlochen, Michigan

Missing Since: March 9, 1983

David's nickname is Dave. He wears prescription eyeglasses. He has a scar on his left wrist and a tattoo on his abdomen.

David was last seen walking along M-137 near the campus of at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, Michigan on March 9, 1983. He was driving a green 1969 Pontiac Lemans at the time. He has never been heard from again.

I noticed that the NamUs photo is described as a 1982 mugshot.

Okay, this article provides more context. I will note that there is an Indiana man with the same name who is much better documented and a different person, to anyone else searching. I was unable to find any court records relating to the 1982 mugshot, but as he could have been a minor at the time/I wasn't patient enough to check the court records of every surrounding county, that's not hugely surprising. There are several other people with the middle and last names of David Gionet listed as being in trouble with the law in Grand Traverse County, though, maybe relatives? Although he is listed in this article as 19, I believe he would not have turned 19 until May, per the birthdate in NamUs.

''David Robert Gionet, 18, was reported missing on March 7, 1983, The case has been reopened by Michigan State Police Cadillac Post after it was determined that it is unlikely Gionet attempted to walk across a partially frozen lake, leading to his death.Provided by Michigan State Police''

At the time, witnesses said they saw Gionet walking along the roadway back to his residence, police said. Before leaving the party, he had talked about walking across the partially frozen lake to make the walk home shorter.

He never made it home.

Divers from MSP and the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office searched Green Lake for several days after Gionet’s disappearance. His body was never recovered.

It was reported that Gionet was afraid of water and couldn’t swim. Witnesses told investigators Gionet had already removed his ice shanty from the lake due to the warm weather and the ice being unsafe.

“This information makes it more unlikely he attempted to walk across the lake,” MSP said in the release.''

“The ice conditions at that time in March 1983 weren’t good,” Carroll said. “So for him to even begin to walk across the lake, he would’ve almost immediately fallen in the water.”

He said this information makes it even more unlikely that Gionet attempted to walk across the lake.

According to Carroll, the detective trooper who was in charge of this case asked for the media to be notified in an attempt to try and gather more leads.

After speaking with an MSP analyst in their detective bureau, the trooper went back and re-interviewed everyone from the original case file, he said.

“We’re just hoping to bring some closure for the family on this case as to what happened to him,” Carroll said

Okay, so is the car missing too?

I think it would be helpful to know what the tattoo is on his abdomen. Hopefully a family member or friend can fill us in.
