<<snipped>> A Washington, D.C., journalist was fatally shot when the intended victim of a bullet used the young woman, who was transferring buses, as a human shield, police and family members said.

Charnice Milton, 27, was in the “wrong place, wrong time” and was “certainly not the intended victim,” D.C. police Chief Cathy Lanier told reporters at a somber scene in southeast D.C. She’d been covering a community meeting and texted her mother afterwards to say she was headed home. Ten minutes later, the innocent victim was gunned down in the street.

Earlier this month:

Five days away from Christmas, two Southeast parents say there is only one thing they truly want: an arrest in the unsolved murder a young D.C. journalist...

“They have some leads, but a lot of the leads are basically old,” said McClenton telling WUSA 9 he spoke with a detective last just this Saturday...

There is a reward up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest.

This month marks the one year since a local journalist was shot and killed. Her unsolved murder and the many more in D.C. have clergy members taking on the fight to solve them.

From Catholics to Muslims, leaders of various faiths met at the Salvation Army Solomon G. Brown Community Center on Saturday morning. They are part of the Open Heart/Case Close Campaign, fueled by slain journalist, Charnice Milton’s family. The goal is to remind D.C., the Southeast community especially, of all the loved ones lost who have still not received justice.

Milton’s photo was one of more than 100 pasted to poster-boards showing D.C.’s unsolved murders since 2011.

The dark, dingy staircase leads to an even dingier basement. A basement with a maze of stacked boxes, dusty cleaning supplies, moldy walls and abandoned furniture...

Freeman is spearheading an effort to transform the drab space into the only bookstore east of the Anacostia River, an area that includes many of the District’s poorest neighborhoods.

As details of the project evolve, organizers have settled on this: It will be named the Charnice Milton Community Bookstore in honor of the 27-year-old journalist fatally shot two years ago in Southeast. Police say Milton was on her way home from covering a community meeting and wasn’t the intended target. No arrests have been made in the case.
