(...) Geoffrey Klopp, president of the Correctional Officers Association of Delaware, said he was told by the Department of Correction commissioner that prison guards were taken hostage at the JTVCC.

As NBC Philadelphia's SkyForce10 hovered near the correctional facility around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, dozens of law enforcement members could be seen staging near a gate. A short time later, a group of people are seen rushing someone on a stretcher to another building on the sprawling campus.

(...)

The prison, which dates back to 1971, houses minimum, medium and maximum security prisoners as well as the state's death row inmates, says the state Bureau of Prisons.

I could never be a correctional worker. These people put their life on the line daily and are grossly underpaid!

Inmates at a Delaware prison took five corrections department workers hostage Wednesday, a move the inmates told a local newspaper was due to concerns about their treatment and the leadership of the United States.

(...) One hostage was released Wednesday afternoon, but four remained in custody and negotiations were ongoing as the evening stretched on, authorities said.

(...)

Later, inmates reached out to The News Journal in Wilmington in two phone calls to explain their actions and make demands. Prisoners funneled the calls to the paper with the help of one inmate's fiancee and another person's mother. The mother told the paper her son was among the hostages.

In that call, an inmate said their reasons "for doing what we're doing" included "Donald Trump. Everything that he did. All the things that he's doing now. We know that the institution is going to change for the worse."

That caller said education for prisoners was the inmates' priority. They also said they want effective rehabilitation for all prisoners and information about how money is allocated to prisons.

Sometime a correctional officer's dangerous job is overlooked. There are many who are severely assaulted every year and some COs have been murdered. In a lot of this prisons the guards are so vulnerable since they are far outnumbered by dangerous inmates.

I pray that all of the guards being held hostage come out safe and unarmed.

So how did these violent acts help anything. Violence never resolves anything. Now all involved will have added charges that will result in more time for those involved.

When this ends the security will be increased and the prisoners freedom will be greatly restricted. All those involved will be charged with numerous offences resulting in longer sentences after they have been punished probably with much higher security ratings and possibly with solitary confinement. They cannot be allowed to get away with this, they have to be punished for doing this. Unfortunately prisoners are not really particularly intelligent and they don't understand this does not accomplish anything, it only makes everything much worse. :notgood:

I'm not sure I agree with that. At all. I volunteer in the women's prisons in Texas, and there are some really intelligent and interesting people there.

Prayers that this ends well.
