Circumstances of disappearance :
Domenico, 11 years old, lived in Rome. On June 21, 1993, school was over and he did have good grades so his uncle, Francesco, promised he would buy him a gift. They both left left on a scooter, but they never returned. The scooter was found some time later, parked in the Boccea district, but there was no trace of the two. Some witnesses saw them around 8:30 p.m. in Viale dei Monfortani in Torrevecchia. Hours passed but they didn't come back home.
The family context, marked by the father's membership complicated the investigations. The father, Salvatore Nicitra, is / was actually linked to the Banda della Magliana (gang). With interests in gambling, extortion and money laundering. Francesco Nicitra also had run-ins with the law.
Francesco Nicitra was named as the main suspect, but lack of evidence prevented any formal charges.
Domenico's disappearance has often been associated with the one of Emanuela Orlandi, which occurred in 1983. Both cases are linked to the Banda della Magliana and possibly have links with the Vatican. Enrico De Pedis, one of the gang's leaders, was identified as being involved in the kidnappings. According to Sabrina Minardi, De Pedis' former lover, the two children were killed and their bodies hidden together, although these claims have never been confirmed.
Investigators explored various avenues, including revenge through clandestine betting. Domenico may have been targeted to hit his father Salvatore, but the lack of ransom demands and lack of concrete evidence made it difficult to confirm this hypothesis.
Others suggest that the real target was Francesco Nicitra and that the situation escalated tragically.
