At least 58 people died and 160 others were injured in the Dominican capital early Tuesday when the roof collapsed at an iconic nightclub where politicians, athletes and others were attending a merengue concert, authorities said.

Merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who was performing at the time of the collapse, died in the disaster, his manager, Enrique Paulino, confirmed in a statement to CBS News.

Paulino, whose shirt was spattered with blood, told reporters at the scene that the concert began shortly before midnight, with the roof collapsing almost an hour later.

"It was sudden. I thought it was an earthquake, so I threw myself to the ground and covered my head," he said.

Was this a multi-story building, with the nightclub on a lower floor?

Last I heard, at least 100 people were still declared missing.

Seems like it was only one floor. But the building appears to have had very heavy AC units on top of the roof. IMO, the vibrations from the AC units weakened the concrete roof over time. It reminds me of the 1995 South Korean mall collapse.

If this was a dedicated music venue, there'd be vibration from that, too. Loud bass vibrates things plenty. We have a car that drives past our house at least once a day, and when it does, all the pictures on the wall and all the gyprock(drywall) itself buzzes violently for a good twenty seconds as the car approaches and passes. I can't imagine how by the subwoofers must be to do that, especially as our house is brick veneer.

Roof collapse at Dominican club kills at least 113 as officials scramble to identify victims

The legendary Jet Set club in Santo Domingo was packed with musicians, professional athletes and government officials when dust began falling from the ceiling and into people’s drinks.
