Family of local serial killer victim says a life behind bars isn’t enough

May he continue to rot in prison while we instead remember the good people he victimized.

Today marks 47 years since the murders of Donna and Richard Hyde. Their memory rises far above anything to do with this human garbage.

He was basically the Eastern Night Stalker, though is more often called "the Shotgun Killer". He committed a total of at least 19 brutal murders in the late 1970s, 18 of which occurred in small towns and rural areas along the Ohio/Pennsylvania border, and one that occurred in South Carolina. He's one of the most prolific home-invading killers in US history, with a higher victim count than Richard Ramirez or Joseph DeAngelo, yet few have ever heard of him. Most of these murders were sexually-motivated home invasion murders, but in a few cases, Surratt would commit "thrill killings" in which he would approach people sitting alone in their cars and shoot them with a shotgun. In most if his murders, he would usually break into a couple's house late at night, kill the husband first, and then rape the wife, before killing her as well. He would typically shoot them with a shotgun, but in some cases would bludgeon his victims in the head with heavy objects such as an iron skillet or a baseball bat. Usually, the victims were left in their homes, but in some cases, the victims were found in wooded areas some distance from their homes. Strangely, while Surratt seemed to have no qualms about killing adults, he seemed unable to bring himself to kill children, and if he encountered kids during one of his home invasions, he would barricade them in a closet before continuing with the murder of their parents. Anyway, it's one of the craziest and most terrifying SK cases in United States history, and I'm shocked it's so little known.
