In the early hours of Tuesday, January 7, shrill noises pierced the freezing night air in Aberdeen. They seemed to have been coming from the river Dee. Were they screams? Cries for help?

Their brother Jozsef has suggested they were saving to buy their own property in the city but, contrary to some reports, Police Scotland say they had given no indication prior to that text to their landlady on January 7 that they planned to move out.

That’s different. The police themselves at one stage said in the days beforehand they had indicated they would be terminating the tenancy. If the article is correct it paints a different picture of events. Something more spontaneous possibly.

I think their father is clutching at straws here. He hadn't been in contact with his daughters for 12 years, he did not know them, nor what their life was like. If the scream was one of the women, it would likely be from shock at how cold the water was. If they met someone there and there was a scuffle, there would likely be more than a single scream, and possibly evidence left behind. His scenario just sounds like he can't accept the fact his daughter's may have chosen to take their own lives. MOO

I wonder whether the rest of his family are happy about him making these statements to the press . I imagine he would be paid for any comments he makes.

As a former journalist, the paper I worked for would not have paid for comments in this situation.

Identity of the sisters has been confirmed formally by Police Scotland.

‘Superintendent David Howieson said: "The two bodies recovered from the River Dee on Friday 31 January 2025 have now been formally identified as Henrietta and Eliza Huszti who were reported missing on Tuesday 7 January 2025.

"Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the exact cause of death however there are no apparent suspicious circumstances."’

BREAKING: Two bodies found in the River Dee, Aberdeen, have been identified as a pair of sisters who had gone missing, police have confirmed. Henrietta and Eliza Huszti - both 32 and part of a set of triplets - disappeared on 7 January.

The bodies were on 31 January near where they were last seen alive. Their deaths are not being treated as suspicious.

Regarding hypothermia, according to emedicinehealth, it can take as little as 15 minutes for the person to lose consciousness, with death occurring in 15 to 45 minutes, especially if they are in very cold water:

...People die of hypothermia faster in water than in air, because water has a high thermal conductivity that can cool a person at least 24-times faster than air.

A person who is immersed in near-freezing water at temperatures of 32.5°F/0.3°C will have symptoms of mild hypothermia in under 2 minutes and will be unconscious in less than 15 minutes, with an expected survival time of 15 to 45 minutes....

Actually, drowning in cold water would most likely have been quicker than hypothermia, it could have happened in seconds, due to cold shock.
