Ezra was abducted by his non-custodial mother, Terumi Kakiuchi. At the time of the abduction, Ezra's father, Samuel Lui, had sole custody of him due to Kakiuchi being arrested for spousal abuse in June 1999. He allowed her to have an overnight visitation with Ezra and she then fled with him to Japan. His father petitioned the courts in Japan to recognize the US ruling and while they recognized it he was only granted three hours a year visitation with his son. They are still believed to be in Osaka, Japan.
