Circumstances of Disappearance

Friday, January 6, 2006: At around 9:30 a.m., Michael Heger picks up his two-year-old son Felix from his mother Manuela in Oftersheim (Rhein-Neckar district). It is a public holiday in Baden-Württemberg (Epiphany), and on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. he was supposed to bring the child back to his divorced ex-wife after the extended father-son weekend.

But Michael and Felix didn't come back.

Manuela filed a missing person report on Sunday evening, and an initial search for people initially focused on the area around Oftersheim. When Michael's car was found in a parking lot in the Bühlertal in the Black Forest (Rastatt district) two days later, the intensive search for people shifted to the Black Forest.

Hundreds of police combed the Bühlertal in 2006.

Several traces of blood are also found in the Bühlertal, which can later be attributed to Michael. Above where the car was found, further personal belongings belonging to Michel and Felix are discovered in a rock niche in the forest: at first glance, the site reminds us of a bivouac. But there is still no trace of the two missing people.

On February 26, 2006, seven weeks after his disappearance, Michael's body was found - just a few hundred meters in the forest below the parking lot where his car was found at the beginning of January.

However, there was no trace of Felix; he has disappeared to this day.

Chronik

Chronology

What happened on those cold days in January 2006? Felix was born on April 8, 2003. His parents separated in November 2003. They were legally divorced in June 2005. They had joint custody of their son. The little boy lived with his mother in Oftersheim. His father, Michael Heger (referred to as MH) had paternal visitation rights, which he sometimes exercised very unreliably by canceling appointments at short notice and shortening or extending the times.

On Friday, January 6th, 2006 (Epiphany), MH picked up Felix from his mother off. On Sunday, January 8, 2006, MH did not bring Felix back as agreed with his mother. After all attempts to reach her ex-husband by telephone and at his house in Oftersheim were unsuccessful, the mother immediately filed a complaint against MH on suspicion of child abduction at the Schwetzingen criminal police branch.

On Monday, January 9th, 2006, the The responsible authority started the investigation. MH's apartment was opened and two books were found lying on his bed in which suicide methods were described. MH had already attempted suicide in 2000 - although this was not a determined suicide attempt. He was then in inpatient treatment, which he stopped after 3 days.

On Tuesday, January 10, 2006, the police launched a large-scale search operation in the Schwetzingen/Hockenheim area and the adjacent outskirts. A police helicopter was also used. There was no trace of either of them. MH was driving a car, Opel, Astra, built in 1995, white, limousine with sliding glass roof, license plate: HD-PD 847.

Days before, on the night of January 6th to 7th 2006, the car was noticed by a taxi driver in the Wiedenfelsen/Bühlertal parking lot. On January 7, 2006, the car was noticed by a police patrol. On Tuesday, January 10, 2006, late in the afternoon, the vehicle parked in Bühlertal was recognized as that of MH

From Wednesday, January 11th, 2006, a major search operation was launched, with a hundred police officers, search dogs and a helicopter extensively searching the area around the car parking area. A garbage bag with blood spatter on it was found next to the car. Traces of blood were found on the snow surface as well as some plastic bags with blood deposits, which were later clearly assigned to MH. The operation had to be interrupted in the evening due to darkness.

On Friday, January 13, 2006, the large search operation continued with several people and search dogs. Approximately 300 m from the car parking lot, a shelter was discovered in a rock niche that was not suitable as a place to sleep or stay. Items of clothing such as a men's jacket, a child's glove and a pacifier, which could be clearly assigned to the missing people, were seized. In addition, a backpack, ID card, EC card and 1 empty 0.04 liter bottle were found. Brandy, 1 empty bottle. Liqueur 0.7 liters, 1 empty packaging of sleeping pills. On the copy of the driver's license that was found in his jacket pocket, MH had written a letter to his ex-wife on the back. The large-scale search operation ran up to and including January 14, 2006. Afterwards, it ultimately had to be canceled completely due to heavy snowfall. MH and Felix were not found!

MH and Felix were seen by several witnesses between January 6th, 2006 and approximately January 18th, 2006. There is a witness who observed both of them in the supermarket in Bühl on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at around 5:30 p.m. She noticed that the adult was otherwise well-groomed but had very dirty hands. Furthermore, MH and Felix were seen by two different witnesses on Friday, January 13, 2006, between 7:20 a.m. and 7:25 a.m. near the Iffezheim barrage border crossing on the French side and in the parking lot of the former customs building. According to the two witnesses, the man must have been walking with the child because there was no parked vehicle in sight.

On January 18, 2006, a road user claims to have seen MH with Felix at the Iffezheim barrage. A manhunt launched immediately - which was also extended to France - turned out negatively.

On Sunday, February 26th, 2006 at around 2:20 p.m., a full seven weeks later, a male corpse, gnawed on the face by wild animals, was found by a walker's dog in Bühlertal, Gertelbach Waterfalls area , discovered. The location where the body was found was only 300 m below the parking lot where the police seized MH's car on January 10th, 2006.

After it was established that the unknown body was MH, a search was made for the missing child on Tuesday, February 28th, 2006. Large-scale search operation was carried out with 4 cadaver and blood detection dogs. The dogs sniffed out two splashes of blood under the blanket of snow and were able to identify them with MH. But no trace of Felix was found. The search operation had to be stopped again due to heavy snowfall.

On Tuesday, April 4th, 2006, and the following day, another search operation was carried out, this time with 5 corpse search dogs from the Karlsruhe criminal police. If the father had perhaps buried his son, the dogs would certainly have found something. There was severe frost at the time, temperatures lasting below zero for weeks, so this theory is definitely not applicable, because the ground was frozen solid! He also couldn't have thrown his son into the water, because due to the severe frost there was no running water in the streams, everything was frozen solid. Felix was not found and one thing became clear: there was not the slightest indication that Felix had ever been there in the Black Forest. The search dogs were unable to find any trace of Felix.

During the major search operation between January 11, 2006 and January 14, 2006, this area was combed several times and searched from a helicopter with thermal imaging cameras, but no one was seen. It must be assumed that MH and his son had a third person pick them up from the Wiedenfelsen/Bühlertal parking lot. It can be assumed that MH handed over his son Felix to a person who is still unknown to this day. His large-scale escape operation was well planned and well prepared. He deliberately laid false clues, such as blood splatters in the car, blood-smeared plastic bags at the edge of the forest, setting up a shelter that was easy to track down and ultimately the handwritten letter to his ex-wife, which should be viewed as a so-called farewell letter.

In 1997, MH attended a 7-week seminar in the *ZEGG* group in Portugal. From that point on he had completely changed. His whole being, his attitude towards the environment, his lifestyle and everything. He visited the Wassermann Center in the Black Forest. This existed until 1999, after which it was continued under the new name *LICHTNETZ EUROPA*. It is still unknown which sect groups he was in contact with. There are many groups in the Black Forest that are known as sects. MH knew the Black Forest very well. He knew every corner there. That's precisely why we're increasingly looking for Felix in southern Germany/France/Switzerland. Of course, the search anywhere abroad remains uninterrupted.

The missing cash

On January 2nd, 2006 and January 5th, 2006, Michael Heger picked up a total of 700 euros from an ATM in Oftersheim.
On January 13th, 2006, the wallet was found in the rock niche, it still contained less than 80 euros .There is no indication of what could have been done with this amount of cash. Spending it would probably have brought witnesses to the scene who would then have come forward - simply “throwing it away” seems illogical. There is reasonable suspicion that at least one unknown person is still involved and could have received this amount of money.

Garbage bags, traces of blood & the “rock niche"

On January 11th, 2006, Michael Heger’s Opel Astra was found in front of the “Wiedenfelsen” hotel in Bühlertal (Baden-Württemberg). Witnesses had it there from the night of January 6th to 7th, 2006 seen (other witnesses partly from around December 22, 2005!).

There were a few traces of Michael Heger's blood in the car itself, which appeared to be blurred, as did the garbage bags found. Several green garbage bags were discovered, as well as a few small drops of blood in the snow - the time between finding the tracks and causing them does not seem to have been long ago. A few hundred meters from the car, more of Michael's personal belongings are found in a rock niche, including: Also jacket, backpack, wallet, glove individually from Felix and a handwritten letter... Everything seemed placed and prepared, as if it should be found quickly.

Felix's single glove makes no sense because Michael Heger knew that the counterpart was with his grandparents.

Among other things, the backpack contained a bottle of Amaretto liqueur and a small bottle of Asbach Uralt. They also found empty tablet strips and packaging for “Betadorm-D”, a freely available sedative/sleeping pill. Not only was Michael an anti-alcoholic, but the over-the-counter tablets were also completely unsuitable for committing suicide. The residues found in the corpse suggest that tablets had been taken, but according to the manufacturer, over 80 tablets would have been necessary to achieve a lethal effect - but only 20-30 were available.

Witness sightings in Oftersheim, Bühl and at the Iffezheim barrage

Even before it was clear that Felix would not be brought back, an older lady had a strange encounter on Saturday morning, January 7th, 2006: After she had gotten some rolls from the bakery, she was approached by a man , whom she would identify in the newspaper days later as Michael Heger.

According to the witness report, the man tells her that she should go to the police about it and that she would find out what it was about later from the newspapers. “A father is allowed to travel with his son…” is the core message of this strange encounter. During the conversation, an unknown couple joins them. According to the witness, Michael Heger sends the two of them to the train station.

Felix wasn't with him, the Opel Astra was already there in Bühlertal, over 100km away!

Strange: On the same day, a witness had an encounter with a man and a woman who were picking up a jacket from an alterations shop - just a few meters away. The woman walks nervously through the store, the man starts talking in small talk about how he has just been released from prison in Mannheim. This witness sighting was recorded, but since nothing could be proven or clarified, it was not pursued further.

A saleswoman at a discount store served Michael Heger and Felix on January 11th, 2006 around 5:30 p.m. (Minutes before, Michael Heger's car was seized just a few kilometers away). The description of the clothing is accurate, even though it was not advertised as a wanted item at the time. They buy rolls and a surprise egg for Felix. Several witnesses each and independently see a man and a child at the Iffezheim barrage (French border crossing). They sometimes seem to be waiting for someone, sometimes disoriented and sometimes “playing”. The two are never found, also because communication from the authorities failed completely and in some cases no one drove there until hours later. There were no similar sightings before or after the search!

Sniffer dog “Luna”

On January 11, 2006, “Luna” was assigned to take a smell test from Felix. The dog led from the Wiedenfelsen car park (red marking on the right in the picture) directly to the “Sickenwalder Horn”, where they found cut hair that did not come from Felix or his father. On January 14th, 2006, the dog led to the former hotel “Schindelpeter”, where She followed the trail to an apartment door and sat in front of it. Inside the apartment there was virtual chaos because apparently no one had been here for weeks. From this attic apartment, the dog then led again to the “Sickenwalder Horn”. To what extent the cut hair and also the apartment with the tenant, as well as the track taken to the “Sickenwalder Horn” could have anything to do with the case have not yet been clarified.

The letter

On January 23rd, 2006, a letter was delivered addressed to a company where Michael Heger had a training or job interview for a few days. It was written that someone wishes them all the best for the new year, as well as good business. The letter ends with “From Michael who was there at the training.” Attached is an excerpt from a large article in the Bild newspaper by Felix and his father. Neither handwriting nor traces match that of Michael Heger. Between publication The Bild newspaper article (January 11, 2006) and the delivery of the letter took 12 days, why? What's more: no outsider could have known that Michael Heger had a training course there for less than a week! The company doesn't even have a website. The suspicion arises that someone here knows more than the police. No special meaning/mention was given to the letter.

The body was found

On February 26, 2006, walkers found the body of Michael Heger on the side of the road. What is unusual is that the body did not have a jacket or other winter-proof clothing, one shoe was also taken off and the sock was put in the trouser pocket. Glasses were also not found, without them Michael Heger was virtually disoriented. A white shoelace soaked in blood was found underneath the corpse. The autopsy showed that there were no signs of frostbite and that no alcohol was detectable in the blood or urine.

However, a small "puncture mark" was found on the wrist - but the recommended examination and a toxicological report were not considered necessary by the public prosecutor's office and were rejected.

Internal injuries were found and also broken ribs, which, according to forensic medicine, probably led to death. A second, external report from the thorax specialist Dr. Ortlieb contradicts this assumption: The injuries would be painful, but would not lead to death. It is also doubtful whether the injuries occurred during his lifetime, as there are medical signs that could point to the opposite. Although the cause of death is officially unknown, it is suspected that Michael Heger staggered through the forest due to previously taking pills and had a fatal accident. The body was so obviously lying on a small dirt road that it should have been found during the large-scale search operations in January 2006 - if it had already been there.

Years later, the order for the unanswered questions about the body is given, but it is too late for that, the preserved material has been destroyed.

The 700 euros would be about $765 US dollars? In 2006 that was a weeks pay? Lots to unpack with this.

Thank You @Megsc , for starting this thread! An absolutely fascinating case that I have never heard of till now. I'm thinking Michael Heger might have given Felix to what I am assuming is a cult. JMO MOO edited for spelling

You're very welcome my dear!
Came across this case as I was looking into an other one, and I was stunned to have never hear about it until now, as it was not so long ago and really close to home !!
Yeah I think too that either Felix was given to the cult, or the father was killed by members and they took Felix away

The 700 euros would be about $765 US dollars? In 2006 that was a weeks pay? Lots to unpack with this.
I don't think that would have been a weekpay in France in 2006, knowing that now it's about 2 weekpays (depending on your job obviously)
But I feel like this is not a lot of money, if he wanted to give it to somebody in exchange of taking Felix with him, you know ?
I mean, I would need much more money to be convinced of hiding a missing child lol
So I can't really have a define idea about what he could have done with that money

So I tried to find info on the group/sect known as "ZEGG" (tried to search under the name "LICHTNETZ EUROPA" but couldn't find nothing, or it leads to ZEGG so I don't know about the name changing that was talked about in a previous article).
The group actually has a website : Startseite - ZEGG Bildungszentrum
ZEGG is actually the name of their community. It's described as an eco-village.
Here's the introduction to their website :

"We invite you to learn more with us about social change, successful relationships, and a mindful approach to nature.

Visit our festivals and seminars, get advice from our experts or browse our knowledge library.

Together, we will discover how connection and cooperation are born - for a fulfilling life that does not come at the expense of future generations."

They also have a quite interesting website in French : Cursus de formation - Forum de ZEGG
It talks about some kind of "therapy" (I guess) called "forum".
It's said it helps you with "cultural transformation, group emotional management, and personal developpement".
They also describe how their "class" go :

"A group of people sitting in a circle in which a participant can enter and is accompanied, in their speaking, by the facilitator.

A framework of trust and safety is created in which individuals explore personal themes and receive feedback from other participants. It is an invitation to show oneself in one's vulnerability, to experience the support of the collective to go through emotions. As a result, a common feeling of belonging to humanity emerges.

For the ZEGG ecovillage (where it was developed) as for the communities of Los Portales or the Village of Pourgues, this tool strengthens group cohesion by offering spaces of emotional transparency which create trust between people and contribute to significantly to conflict prevention."

Zegg, communauté allemande
Here's some another interesting stuffs on this community (based on the testimony of this woman)

"The basic principles behind ZEGG come from the (controversial) texts of Dieter Duhm and Sabine Lichtenfels who have now created a "sister" community in Portugal called Tamera. Today, around 80 adults and 20 children live in ZEGG, in addition to a constant flow of visitors who come for workshops and conferences on various themes, such as communication, love and the arts. These workshops are the main means of livelihood for the community.
The primary goal of ZEGG is to establish a center for international conferences and research on the development of sustainable social and ecological models. They try to embody this goal in their everyday actions. Thus, the majority of what fills their plate comes from their garden or the region; new constructions are carried out in an ecological manner and decisions are taken unanimously in plenary, after having been considered by a group made up of thirteen people: the council of thirteen.

A swimming pool filled with algae and fish as well as several fruit trees adorn the landscape. There are places for meditation, including a huge circle in the middle of the field where morning meditation is held, a sauna, two sweat lodges, a small café, a craft shop, art workshops, etc.

Each member of the community must either pay rent or work in the community in exchange for being housed and fed there. The majority of members work in the community.
(..)
TZEGG is recognized for its emphasis on interpersonal relationships. The emphasis is placed on the rediscovery of love for oneself and love for others, a free love, that is to say freed from fear.
(..)
In their exploration of interpersonal relationships, in addition to communication tools, many members of the community choose to live periods or a lifetime of polygamy to open up more to others and develop their trust in others.
(..)
It’s also the aspect of the community that has sowed the most controversy in the surrounding area or that drives many people to come and look around."
