Janne Puhakka, former ice hockey player, and reality game show (The Traitors) participant, was shot and killed by his former partner/ex-husband, 66-years-old Norwegian veterinary Rolf Nordmo, on 13 October 2024, when Janne went to their former shared home to take care of some "practical matters". They had been a couple since 2014. The trial against Nordmo will begin on Thursday 13 March, 2025. Nordmo has admitted to having killed Puhakka, but denies murder.

Janne Puhaka's parents presented a claim to the court

[Roughly translated by me]

Rolf Nordmo was not happy about receiving a life sentence for the murder of his ex-partner. But Jaanne Puhakka's parents see that Nordmo planned the murder beforehand.

Rolf Nordmo's, 67, appeal has arrived at Helsinki Court of Appeal.

The appeal includes reasoning that Nordmo is requesting for his murder conviction to be overturned. In the district court's eyes the event was murder, because it was especially heinous and is rated as a gross offense.

Nordmo claims he is only guilty of manslaughter. According to him the case was not especially heinous or cruel. In the appeal it is claimed that according to the coroner that Puhakka might have already lost consciousness at the first shot. Also the amount of hits with the shotgun has been left unclear according to Nordmo.

Nordmo shot Puhakka, 29, twice with a hunting shotgun in his chest at the couple's previous house in Espoo on the evening of 13 October. After this Nordmo beat Puhakka in the head with the pipe of the shotgun several times, according to district court up to 9-10 times.

Puhakka died of his injuries. The background to the event was the end of a 10 year relationship between Puhakka and Nordmo.

The District court saw the deed in full as especially heinous because it came as a complete surprise to Puhakka, and it happened in the shared home of the victim and accused.
– Foul play often comes as a surprise to the victim, and unfortunately the victim is often known to the offender, it is stated in Nordmo's appeal.

Puhakka's parent instead state that the case should be seen as murder because it had bee carefully considered and planned. But the district court stated that there was not enough evidence to prove that Nordmo had planned the events.

– The event has been prepared in advance. The weapon was brought to Finland exactly during the couple's crisis, even though it had not been needed in Finland before. The weapon has been easy to access, it has been loaded and been fired twice, the counter appeal states.

Puhakka's parents also state that Nordmo's actions and notes that were shown in the court show that he had been planning the attack.

– From Nordmo's side there was no case of a surprise or actions out of control. There is nothing in before the events that could explain the shooting and the assault after the shooting, the parent's counter appeal states.

Also the prosecutor and Janne Puhakka's sister state in the counter appeals that the charge should be murder because of the planning.
