50 K seems high unless they destroyed electronics
If there was any Hazmat cleanup, it wouldn't be. That's not cheap.
In my old town during the summer, 5 teenage boys broke into the Catholic high school and did a comparable amount of damage. The "stupid criminals" aspect of this, besides them going on the then-fledgling social media and bragging about it (see footnote), was that someone had defecated on a teachers' desk, and when DNA identified the culprit, he tried to say that his twin brother, who had also participated in the vandalism, did that, and no they weren't identical. (I worked with several people who had attended that school, and yes, they joked about which teachers' desks they would have liked to have done that to themselves.)
Footnote: Around the same time, a water park opened, and maintenance workers discovered that someone had poured cooking oil on the slide, which damaged the finish badly enough, it would have to be replaced to the tune of $30,000. Those kids also bragged about it, and in this case, they had to make restitution.
I agree, these kids need counseling and possibly to make restitution when they can get jobs.
