She bit her baby??? Animals bit each other, not people.

Annie - keep fighting louder and louder. It is unconscionable that the baby was bitten by a human and no one thinks this warrants at least supervised visits with bio-dad, the sperm donor. You have PIX and an attorney? Get thee to the court house.

His probation violation was on a drug charge. When we went through the baby's clothes, we found a "roach joint". All this was turned over to LEO but nothing has been done. He claims the next door neighbors child bit her and he never hear her cry. I find that hard to believe. She still has bruising from the bites.

Sorry, didn't mean to get off topic. It's just so shameful that DCS and the judicial system do so little to help the little ones.

Almost every time you hear of something like this happening, you read "Child Protective Services" had "investigated" before.

COME ON!!! What is the deal?

I have heard so many times how the are over worked and under paid. Things just happen to slip thru. IMO - enough is enough. The system is broken. Case workers are not qualified in most cases. Or they are simply jaded.

Do the children of this world not deserve more????

I am so sick of millions of dollars thrown all over this country for this or that and the every body knows we need a major overhaul for our children's sake, yet nothing is done.

Government should worry more about this sick system we call child protection services and less about big businesses and oil prices.

IMO

I'm fed up!!!

:clap::clap::clap::clap: AMEN....

One month ago my 11 month old granddaughter came home from her dad's with 11 DEEP bite marks, a bruise on her left cheek, a black eye and a place on the back of her head. I took my daughter to the PD and a report was filed and sent to DCS. Almost 2 weeks later DCS interviewed my daughter. The "dad" is currently in jail (not related to this incident) on a probation violation (he went to jail the day after it happened), but will be out in 10 days. At that time, he gets to see his daughter again. We have been fighting this from the day it happened. Not only has DCS let us down, but the judge has as well. The system is extremely screwed up. My fear is that she'll be hurt worse next time.......and our hands are legally tied. What is it going to take for us to get the system to work at protecting the ones who can't protect themselves?

It's going to take lots of exposure.
Aren't you just totally floored by how the system works ? What they do makes no sense to the rational mind.
You think once the judge hears it, he'll be as shocked as you and will 'fix' it. When he doesn't you feel hopeless and helpless.

More money will not fix it.

Contact your district's state representative, but be careful because if you tick them off enough they'll attack.
Next thing you know, they'll scream 'parental alienation' and give her to the abuser.

If you took photos of the previous bites and bruising and they are literally telling you to give her back for unsupervised visitation I would have those photos and the names of every official involved in the hands of a reporter asap.

There is no government agency now or in the future that can protect children from their own parents. It makes no sense that we have this many children in need of protection from the people that are suppose to care the most for them.

I think sex offenders should be executed and we should pay people for voluntary sterilization/release of their exisiting children.

I agree. My frustration is with the fact that they were called out before. That is the norm. Just about every time something like this happens, we find out they were called out before. The problem seems to be that the case workers are not held accountable for anything. So, what makes them do the best they can? NOTHING

Oct 2009:

Ashley Diaz was unconscious when her mother called for help Aug. 10. Doctors discovered that the 4-month-old infant's body was covered in what looked like human bite marks. Ashley died the following day.

Her mother, Katie Furtaw, admitted to Orlando police she bit the infant out of frustration when the baby would not stop crying, according to reports.

"She said the victim would keep crying after being fed and being given diaper changes, and she did not know how to deal with it. She admitted to biting the victim out of frustration between 5 and 10 times," the police report said.

DCF already was investigating the family at the time of Ashley's death.

Furtaw was arrested on a charge of aggravated child abuse but later released on $5,000 bail. The State Attorney's Office has not formally filed charges against the 21-year-old unemployed woman. Family members said she is mentally disabled from lead poisoning.

August 2009:

"She said she 'nibbled' on the baby in a 'playful manner'". But in a follow up interview Jones says Furtaw, "did admit she bit the baby out of frustration. She didn't think she bit her that bad, but obviously the girl has injuries."

Two doctors, however could not conclusively determine the injuries are human bite marks and a Forensic Odontologist was called in but could not say they were bite marks.
