The child’s name is Ava Natalia Perry. They said she went missing from her home in the 8500 block of Alam Avenue, off of South Biscayne. A couple of hours into the search, deputies say they spotted her a half a mile from her home in the canal, and pulled her out.

Ava was transported to a nearby hospital, but her condition is not known.

Police said she was last seen wearing a diaper and is old enough to walk. They said she was missing for about an hour before she was reported missing.

BREAKING: Missing 1-year-old found in canal a half mile from home

Ava Natalia Perry went missing from her home around 10am. Police say she was playing in the backyard of her home in the 8500 block of Alam Avenue with a "slightly older" sibling, who police say is "around 3," who notified her parents when she went missing. Police were called to the scene around an hour later.

The search focused on the canal behind the girl's home, which police describe as "fast moving" and "aggressive."

Oh man......she was left alone in a baby pool in a yard with no fence by a fast moving canal? Not good. IMO, not good at all.

They are trying to figure out how she got out of her home.

Toddler found in North Port canal dies despite life-saving measures
Ava's father was the one who made the call to police to report his 19-month-old daughter had been missing for about an hour.
"A slightly older sibling, maybe three, was pointing towards the canal calling her sister's name. That's what kind of gave us the direction to look," said Captain Gary Arsenault.
North Port police are still trying to figure out how Ava got out of her home and into the canal.

This is contradicting earlier statements saying she was playing in the backyard of her home.

This news story details what happened in the home before this very tragic drowning. According to this source, the DCF reports mentions that the "girl's mother had left the father in charge of Ava and their other child while she took a nap. When she woke up, she found the father asleep and the other child playing outside of an open sliding glass door."
