Circumstances of Discovery​

Partial skeletal remains were found behind the Volusia County FFA Agriculture Farm. The decedent's face would have been swollen near the time of death and he would have had complained of severe pain and headaches.



According to the autopsy, the cranium represents a white male in his middle or late twenties who may have had a Latin American background. He was probably well built and was of a lower socio-economic class. His death, possibly of natural causes, occurred at least 18 months prior to discovery.

What led them to think his face was swollen and would have had pain and headaches leading up to when he died? Was there some kind of medical condition that could be seen from skeleton remains?

Maybe some kind of dental abscess or, depending on where on the age range he was, an impacted wisdom tooth.

That’s what I think also. Dental infection can quickly get out of hand. I had emergency dental surgery (years ago) not realizing my pain was more than a cavity.

When you go to the ER, they typically give you antibiotics. But you have to follow up with an oral surgeon. He had dental care in the past but maybe circumstances changed. Loss of job, loss of dental insurance or simply not realizing how seriously sick he was.
