It is with a heavy heart that Sheriff Darby Butler announces that the human remains discovered on December 5th in Gilchrist County have been identified as Demiah Appling. Demiah was reported missing in Dixie County on October 24. Investigators determined that Demiah was the victim of a homicide.

When Demiah was reported missing, Sheriff Butler immediately recognized the importance of finding Demiah and assigned a team of investigators to concentrate their efforts on locating her. In addition, the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office partnered with multiple agencies that assisted in the investigation and provided additional resources to aid in finding Demiah’s killer. Sheriff Butler would like to recognize the hard work of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Highway Patrol, The Florida Department of Corrections, the District 8 Medical Examiner’s Office, and the State Attorney’s Office for their assistance on this case.

All agencies’ combined efforts led us to discover Demiah’s final resting place. Our work here is far from over. The Dixie County Sheriff’s Office will continue their investigation and partnership with other agencies to ensure that the people responsible for Demiah’s death are held accountable.

Sheriff Butler would also like to express his appreciation for the hard work, commitment, diligence, and tenacity of the deputies and investigators who have worked so hard on this case and for the outpouring of support from the community.

'I need closure': Grandmother of 14-year-old girl found dead from homicide speaks out

Debra Appling is mourning the loss of 14-year-old Demiah Appling.

She was not only Demiah's grandmother but her legal guardian.

Friends and family say their last goodbyes to Demiah Appling

After months of searching, community members say they are distraught. Private investigator Tammi Jones helped out with the searches.

“The emotions are very mixed, torn up, heartbroken, “ said Jones. “We are missing her and wishing she was here. There are really no words to explain it. She’s a 14-year-old girl, she didn’t have a chance to fulfill her future and dreams.”
