Circumstances:
Eubah Thornton of Orchid Springs, was last seen driving a 1981 Pontiac, dropping her husband off at his work in Winter Haven. Her husband contacted police when she did not arrive to pick him up at 14.00.
The car was found stuck in the mud in a rural area southwest of Kissimmee, near the Polk - Osceola county line, on February 15. The car was locked.
Thornton relied on three types of medication, which she did not have with her at the time. It is speculated that Thornton was suffering from a memory lapse, and had driven aimlessly onto the Osceola ranch, and later wandered into the 20.000 acres of wilderness.
Her pocketbook and umbrella was discovered in March 1984, by a hunter, near Lake Hatchineha. The purse contained Mrs. Thornton's
identification. Searchers later discovered a pair of eyeglasses believed to belong to Mrs. Thornton. No other trace of her was found.

KISSIMMEE — Elaine Zovishlack and Eubah Thornton don't know each other, but they have several things in common.

Both are elderly women -- Zovishlack, 65, and Thornton, 70. They suffer from heart-related ailments. Both women's names appear in records at the Osceola County Sheriff's Department. Zovishlack has been missing three weeks. Thornton has been missing three years.

Sailor led the massive search in 1984 for Thornton, a Winter Haven woman who walked into a large swampy area near the south end of Lake Tohopekaliga and has not been seen since.

The search for the frail, easily confused woman involved nearly 100 people -- including five on horseback -- a helicopter, an airplane, three tracking dogs, four off-road motorcycles and 22 four-wheel-drive vehicles.

''We were doing everything humanly possible,'' Sailor said recalling the Thornton case.

Law enforcement officials have visited the swamp several times since the woman's disappearance.

''You never really give up hope,'' Sailor said.
In addition to conducting the investigation, officials also have to soothe members of the victims' families.
Sailor said he took Thornton's nephews into the marshy area where the woman disappeared.
''We took the family in to let them see what we were facing. A lot of times they don't understand. They think we could be doing more,'' he said.
