The pair were in a navy-blue Cigarette boat. Their destination was Abaco, Bahamas, but they did not make it to the island and their boat was never found. It is believed that they may have stopped at Port Everglades Marina, in Ft. Lauderdale, over the following days.

Worried relatives and the manager of a Key Biscayne marina are offering a $10000 reward for information about a Coconut Grove couple reported missing since they left for the Bahamas 12 days ago aboard a 28-foot power boat Eugene Pavey 50 and his wife Melanie 19 pulled out of Key Marina at about 11 am July 1 for Great Abaco island in the Bahamas to seal a deal on a new house according to Barry Yarchin a lawyer and Melanie Pavey’s brother-in-law A missing persons report was filed with the US Coast Guard in Miami July 3 when the Paveys failed to pick up Melanie Pavey’s sister Leslie 15 from the Great Abaco airport as had been planned The missing woman’s parents Sydney and Betty Ann Mass are offering $5000 in reward money That is being matched by Andy Hancock general manager of Key Marina and his brother Charles The couple’s boat had been docked at the marina since January “We want people to know that we take care of our own” Andy Hancock said Monday Hancock said Eugene Pavey was wearing brown suede shorts and a T-shirt on the day he and his wife left in his blue and white Cigarette boat bearing the serial number FL6600DW and powered by twin Mercury 330-horsepower engines Hancock doesn’t recall seeing Melanie Pavey aboard An air search by four Coast Guard aircraft and a US Navy plane has turned up nothing Petty Officer Sean Smith said Monday Nor has the Masses’ own search “We were looking in the area they would likely be refueling the boat” Yarchin said “They knew and we knew they didn’t have enough fuel to make the trip” Yarchin said Eugene Pavey a general contractor purchased the boat about a year ago and had minimal boating experience Eugene Pavey was to meet with real-estate agent Patrick Bethel at noon on July 2 to close the purchase of a $135000 concrete block house located in a subdivision between Art festival ran $600000 in red Eugene and Melanie Pavey at the time of their wedding Marsh Harbor and Treasure Key When the Paveys hadn’t showed up by July 5 Bethel became concerned Bethel described the house as “not palatial but a comfortable three-bedroom on a canal with an adjoining beach lot son report Thurday with Metro-Dade police Detective Robert Sims said his office has been in touch with Coast Guard officials and the Bahamian government Eugene Pavey’s daughter Dallyn 23 said she flew to Miami July 8 the day after learning of her fa- Leslie Mass arrived on the island ’ ther’s disappearance She last spoke a day ahead of schedule to spend with him June 22 the holiday weekend with her sister and brother-in-law Unable to reach them she spent the night at the Great Abaco Hotel She said she became worried the next day when she went to the airport and found the Paveys’ car had not been picked up By that time Sydney and Betty Ann Mass were en route home from Europe where they had been vacationing The Masses filed a missing per- “He invited me down for the Fourth of July weekend" she recalled “I told him I couldn’t make it” The Paveys were married May 16 They had met about a year earlier through a mutual friend and shared a typical boy-meets girl despite their ages.
