A Florida man without any criminal record was handed a 10-day jail stay after he overslept his jury services and missed the court case.
Judge John Kastrenakis also initially sentenced Deandre Somerville to one year of probation and 150 hours of community service after he failed to show up on time for the legal proceedings on Aug. 21.
The 21-year-old, who works in after-school programs for the City of West Palm Beach and Recreation Department, said he’d received his first-ever summons earlier this summer and was later selected as a juror. When the day of the trial rolled around, Somerville did not wake up until 11:30 a.m.— nearly two hours after he set his alarm to wake him for jury duty.
He was so late, he said, that he did not bother to go to the courthouse and instead went straight to the afternoon shift he had at his job.
Kastrenakis lessened Somerville’s probation and community service hours after the would-be juror wrote an apology letter, but he maintained that missing jury duty still warranted reprimand.
