Details of Disappearance
On 04/21/1985, Gregg Haskell was last seen walking westbound on East Ocean Boulevard in Stuart, Florida. When Haskell was first reported missing, his mother had sent him money for a bus ticket to Wisconsin. There was never a record of one purchased. He was supposed to arrive after April 21, but he never arrived and no one heard from him since. He had no car at the time. Gregg’s parents made several attempts to find him but were unsuccessful.

While there are no indications of foul play, he was later classified as endangered because there’s been no contact with him since.

Haskell was described as athletic and active with a large social circle.

Stuart police reactivate 30-year-old missing person case

The Stuart Police Department initially investigated the missing person case involving then-19-year-old Haskell on April 30, 1985.

According to a post by Stuart police, Haskell's mother had arranged to have money sent to him for a bus fare back to Wisconsin. He was scheduled to arrive in Wisconsin after April 21, 1985, but has not been seen or heard from since.

"My parents were really surprised because they've been out of the loop for a year,” Brian told WPBF. “So when my brother first went missing they spent an awful lot of money trying to find him and nothing ever came of it so while they still thought of him, it wasn't something that was regularly spoke of. When I called them and told them what was going on there was a renewed hope that possibly there could be some sort of conclusion brought to the conclusion."

Haskell lived with roommates in apartment in the 1100 block of Asterwood Lane, near the Martin Square Mall, at the time of his disappearance. He grew up in Wisconsin, moved to Florida after graduating high school, and worked as a construction laborer. He was last seen walking westbound in the 1300 block of east Ocean Boulevard near the Little General convenience store, quite a distance from his residence, at 8:00 a.m. on April 21, 1985.

The last time Haskell spoke to his mother, he seemed unhappy and asked if he could come back home. His mother sent him $100 in cash so he could buy a bus ticket to Wisconsin, but he never purchased a ticket and never arrived home. He has never been heard from again. He left behind all his clothes, as well as his motorcycle. The motorcycle was broken at the time he went missing and he may have been using hitchhiking as a means of transportation. Few details are available in his case, but foul play is possible.

'It seems like he just disappeared out of thin air': Detectives in Stuart give 36 year-old cold case one last shot

Detectives on the Treasure Coast are hoping that a questionable police report could generate new leads in a missing person case that has sat cold for 36 years.

Decades have gone by since Gregg Haskall, 19, disappeared, and the original case is shrouded in mystery.


“It seems like he just disappeared out of thin air,” said Detective Joseph Calderone, with the Stuart Police Department.

"One day Gregg was there and the next day he was gone, he left his wallet, ID, all his clothes, everything he had just left in the room,” added Calderone.

Over the last year, investigators conducted interviews that weren’t done when Haskall disappeared and are now discovering major discrepancies in the original police report.

According to police, in April of 1985 Haskall was living in the Stuart area with two roommates before he was reported missing.

"We got the call from Gregg's friend and girlfriend and they called and asked if we had heard from Gregg and we said no,” said Debby Haskall, Gregg’s stepmother.

On April 30, the father of Haskall’s then-girlfriend was the one who ended up filing a police report.

According to the report, he told police Haskall’s father called him the day before to inquire about the welfare of his missing son. He told police he last saw him on April 21 walking Westbound along East Ocean Boulevard.

"In the original report the officer advised that the girlfriend's father had done Gregg's father a favor by reporting him missing, but in one of the interviews we did recently, we talked to Gregg's father and he said that was not what happened,” said Detective Calderone.

"I never talked to him,” said Jim Haskall.

Investigators say they recently learned the father of Gregg’s then-girlfriend died in 2009, so they were never able to interview him about the discrepancies in the police report.

Gregg’s family submitted DNA which was placed into a database to search for possible matches. They also gave police Gregg’s dental records, but over the years nothing conclusive has turned up.

It's possible he was a resident of "The Jungle," a nearby homeless camp that garnered national attention at the time when it was discovered to be home to scores of war veterans.

I'm thinking maybe police told the girlfriend's dad that they couldn't take the report from a non-family member. Feeling pressured and wanting to help, the girlfriend's dad lied and said Jim Haskell had asked him for help because he was in Wisconsin.

I did wonder if the girlfriend's dad was somehow involved, but then why bother to report him missing at all?
