Deputies received a warrant to search the home, but are still asking for the public's help with the case.

On Monday, authorities charged Martinez with first-degree murder, abuse of a dead body and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The Sheriff’s Office declined to release the name of the victim, citing its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a state constitutional amendment designed to protect crime victims.

GIBSONTON — Thanksgiving came and went, and Marquise Hassell’s mother still had not seen or heard from him.

Then, records show, Shyvette Hassell heard that her 29-year-old son might have been killed and that his body was on a property in Gibsonton.

When she went to the home with her boyfriend one day about two weeks ago, they found what appeared to be a partially burned and dismembered body next to a shallow hole.

The discovery sparked a homicide investigation that resulted in last week’s arrest of Edgar Jose Martinez. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office investigators say Martinez, 32, shot Hassell once in the head, then tried to destroy his body.

Gibsonton murder suspect burned body to destroy evidence, report says.
