Thank goodness the bathroom either didn't have a locking main door, or he didn't have the wherewithal to lock it if it did. Poor kid.

I dragged my son to the ladies room until he was like 10 years old... And after age 10.. I would make sure the men's room was empty & guard the men's room and not let anyone in until he came out.

Scary how fast that happened to her. I thought he was caught in the bathroom with her though?

ETA, I read back in the thread and see that he said that he put a cell phone in the bathroom and then asked the girl to get it for him, so I'm guessing that the one minute he was in a came back out was for that purpose, and that the redacted parts of the video likely show him following the girl back in.

Don't feel crazy. I did the exact same thing!

I don't know if anyone remembers, but years ago there was a similar case. I think it was in Las Vegas. A girl about 10 was in some type of small arcade area and a man, probably early twenties, comes in and is kind of playing with her. She left to go to the bathroom and he followed her in and killed her. It was so chilling.

Ok I think I've heard enough --

I've heard too many stories in the last handful of years about children being attacked in public restrooms.

I thought I was being a "good mom" by sending my 7 yr old and 9 yr old girls together if one of them had to go while out shopping -- sometimes I even sent my 4 yr old boy with them! (This would be in a stand alone store, not a mall where they have to walk a long distance -- we're talking WalMart, Kroger, etc).

Maybe I don't need to worry so much if there is strength in numbers, but I've heard enough -- I will be standing IN the restroom if it has multiple stalls, or right outside for the single restrooms.

Good idea! I could always take my boy in with me so my girls could use the bathroom, but I couldn't go in when he had to go in the male restroom. So, I'd stand outside the door and call out to him several times so I could hear his voice. Too many stories about the vulnerability of children in public restrooms for me.

That seems too long for the patent to not check...no blame really, but I would have been in there at two minutes..pee, wash get out if I am not in there with her...

I'm glad the woman was there, but honestly, anyone hearing a child crying out for help would have stopped and checked it out. I walked right into the men's bathroom at a city park when I heard a child screaming - it turned out to be two boys snapping each other with towels.

But honestly, none of us would walk by a screaming child in a restroom.

So many people still walk around with the mindset that it could never happen to them. It is always someone else. I do feel bad for parents who have to live with the consequences of their naive outlook, but it happens so often with such horrific outcomes that I feel we do have to speak out and say that the attitude has to change.

Good for you, Linda. You and your child did not become another statistic. I allowed my son to enter when others were there but I was standing right at the open door even if I had to hold it open myself and called to him several times. HE was annoyed with me, but none of the men ever were. It is up to us to advocate for awareness and action, so if anyone thought you were crazy, it just shows the pressing need for change.
