To acquit these folks is very negligent in my opinion. Regardless of any underlying medical condition this kid had, he should not have died from this. You can never convince me that their actions didn't play some role in his death. To acquit them is insulting.

He never should have been there in the first place. I can't honestly say that he would have died by their actions had he not suffered from the sickel cell trait. I don't believe the second medical examiner - period.

But he WAS there and he DID die. That's like saying a person shouldn't be responsible for shooting someone in the toe who happens to be a free bleeder and they die. Is the shooter not guilty because the victim had a medical condition?

No, that's not what I'm saying. If they had known about his medical issues, they said he would not have been accepted as an offender. Why didn't anyone tell them about his medical condition? Had it NOT been for this condition, what happened to him there would NOT have killed him. So, its one of those vicious circles whereby we could go round and round and still be where we are. They didn't intentionally hurt him, whether those places should even be open or not (in my opinion not), but they were conducting business as usual and because of his medical issues, he couldn't physically handle it. They didn't kill him.

They contributed to his death.

I don't reckon we will ever know that since he's dead.

According to what I heard on the tv tonight, the counselors and nurse aren't out of the woods yet. They may have to face federal charges.

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - The big cases don't go away quietly.
On Friday afternoon, a jury exonerated seven former drill instructors and a nurse, accused of manslaughter in the death of a 14-year-old youth offender.
Minutes afterward, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Florida announced his office would review all the evidence.
The legal counsel for the Florida division of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Chuck Hobbs, said he would petition the federal government to indict the acquitted defendants on civil rights charges. He evoked the name of Rodney King, recalling how Los Angeles police officers were acquitted in King's beating but later served time in federal prison.
"It's just that the life of a Martin Lee Anderson isn't worth the same as a Carlie Brucia; of a Jessica Lunsford," Hobbs told a small crowd at nearby Love Center Baptist Church.
The news of a federal investigation was not good for Henry Dickens, one of two black drill instructors charged in Anderson's death.
"I don't know what to think about that," Dickens said. "It looks like this is going to go on and on."
Dickens, a retired Navy master chief who grew up in the segregated South, said he was disappointed the NAACP continues to call for his conviction.
"Today's NAACP, the only thing they care about is race," he said. "That's not what Dr. Martin Luther King talked about. He talked about a world without race. We need to get away from race in this country. When a kid is born, he doesn't know the difference between black and white. Their parents teach them that. As long as the parents continue to teach that, we'll be divided."

I didn't follow the case, but I know the family/NAACP, and others are completely outraged by the decision of the all-white jury. It's fine to do a Federal review of the decision to see if it was fair.
