MEDICAL EXAMINERS COMMISSION MEETING

ISSUE NUMBER 2: UNIDENTIFIED DECEASED INITIATIVE
Mr. Lucas reported the following success story from District 11:
In April 1989, skeletal remains of a black female were found in a field in Miami-Dade County. Efforts to identify the decedent were attempted, but to no avail. The decedent remained unidentified.
In January 2020, the case was reopened by the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner Department in an attempt to identify the decedent. DNA samples were submitted to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification. The NamUs database was searched for missing person leads and had a profile for missing person Eva Murphy. Miami-Dade Police Department Detective Suzanne Gowdie was contacted and collected family reference samples for the missing person to compare to the decedent. In July 2021, the decedent was identified as Eva Murphy and next of kin was notified

Another case was that of Eva Marie Murphy, a mother of two who went missing on Halloween night 1988 in the Perrine area of South Miami-Dade. For years, her family held out hope that Murphy had just grown tired of her life, but was alive — somewhere. TRACING FAMILY DNA
“If we knew for sure that she was dead, we could maybe accept it and move on,” her father, Edmond Rogers, told the Herald in 1991. “But this way, two years without hide nor hair, it’s hard, especially around Christmastime. Eva would always come over and we’d have a big tree and the babies would be there while we wrapped presents.”
Her case was revived two years ago by Miami-Dade missing persons detective Suzanne Gowdie, who handles cold cases. She and McLaurin compared notes. Eventually, Murphy’s family gave DNA samples that were matched to the badly decomposed remains of a woman who was found in a wooded area in the late 1980s.
Detectives may never know what happened to Murphy — an autopsy could not determine how she died, or even if her death was suspicious.

The case of Eva Marie Murphy is a Halloween mystery. On October 31, 1988, Eva was living at a boarding house in Miami, Florida. There aren’t many details made publicly available regarding her missing person case, but on that day, Eva left the house and never came back. According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), Eva’s loved ones have never seen or heard from her again.
The 29-year-old old reportedly had two children that were left in her grandmother’s care. Eva was known to frequent the Miami-Dade area of Perrine and vanished from the 10200 block of SW 176th Street.
At the time of her disappearance, Eva stood 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighed anywhere between 160 to 185 pounds. She had brown hair and brown eyes. It’s noted in her case file that Eva has “Afro-Indian hair texture” and often wore her “curly/wavy hair in a short afro or updo.” Her ears are pierced and Eva has a scar on her abdomen, scars on the soles of her feet, and a small birthmark on one of her fingers (possibly her thumb). It’s not known what she was wearing when she disappeared, but it’s said that her typical attire included blue jeans, sneakers, and a gold chain with a gold cross pendant. She also went by the name “Eva Marie Rogers.”
