Gilchrist's "dental records and physical description have been sent to the Dade County Medical Examiner's office and nothing has showed up"... And yet a John Doe matching Gilchrist's physical description and circumstances of disappearance was "laying" there since Nov. 3 and no one noticed it. How very sad... MOO JMO

I hope Gilchrist's family find some closure.

Miami police reportedly investigated a homicide in November 1980 involving a John Doe. That unidentified man, detectives would later learn, matched a similar description of Gilchrist.

On June 7, 2023, detectives received word from the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office that it had formally identified Joe Doe as Gilchrist.

His death is still being investigated as a homicide by the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Unbelievable! I wonder if the in-laws ever reported the car stolen. They may have hesitated to do so fearing he would get into trouble but in retrospect it may have led to his killer. The obvious suspect is Georgia "Gene" but he could also have been a victim. It's such a shame that it took 42 and a half years to figure this out.

I looked up Calhoun Georgia and it's not a big place. It was even smaller back in 1980. I did find some obits for men named Eugene from there of a similar generation as Ronald. Gene is usually a nickname for Eugene. Of course that may have been a false name or maybe his middle name. And the hitchhiker may not even have been from Calhoun. It seems an oddly specific location to claim to be from, though, if you weren't at least from that area. "Gene" may still be living. Of course, he may or may not have done it-but he seems the most logical suspect at this point. Yes, he seemed nice and pleasant but one thinks back to the old advice about not picking up hitchikers. If there's truth or some truth in the details he gave back then it maybe possible to determine who he was, whether he's still around or not. The identification of Ronald Gilchrist is definitely an important first step, so it's good that's been accomplished.
