DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A Daytona Beach man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after DNA technology and fingerprints linked him to a murder he committed 18 years ago.

Romer Williams has been sentenced to three consecutive life sentences in prison. He pleaded guilty yesterday to raping and suffocating Mildred Oliver.

Investigators said no evidence pointed to Williams at the time. Advanced DNA and fingerprint technology didn't exist in July 1988 when Oliver's body was found, beaten with a pillowcase over her face.

But detectives laid the groundwork for the technological advances that eventually lead to a conviction as they lifted prints and bodily fluids from the crime scene.

Williams was charged with the slaying in October.
