FL - Multiple Fatalities at Mass Shooting at Madden Gaming Tournament, Jacksonville, 26 Aug 2018

As I have predicted (and heartily applaud), the gamer conventions for Madden have been shut down. Its a murky world, with little oversight. Young people should be out earning an honest living by working from the shoulders down. The location didn't even have a permit to operate, that tells me everything I need to know.

I have to LOL. Some of these gamers make a ton of money via sponsorship, and prizes. There is nothing murky about it. They ARE earning an honest living.
As far as “working from the shoulders down” .... do you feel the same way towards say lawyers? Computer programmers? Teachers?
I guess I just don’t understand.

Gaming is nothing more than unregulated gambling. The mere fact that a premier gaming event would be held in a unpermitted location with little security is proof positive. The "tons of money" is a myth.
The organizers need to be held accountable, as well as the NFL. This is the dark underbelly of the NFL.

How is it gambling? Do you consider golf and tennis tournaments gambling?

<modsnip: rude> First of all, games are regulated as are these tournaments. Secondly, it's not gambling. Gambling is chance. Gaming tournaments are skill. It's no different to a chess tournament. Thirdly, it wasn't a 'premier gaming event'. It was a small qualifying event for a much larger event, which would definitely have security due to the expected numbers. Fourthly, the 'tonnes of money' is not a myth. The total prize pool for this event (the final, larger event) is $1.255 MILLION. Other games, like Dota 2 or LoL or the increasingly popular Fortnite can earn you much more. Finally, whilst this game is associated with the NFL, it's really only in name and in funding. EA are the people who made this game. And the people who made the game are not responsible. People who hold a chess tournament where someone gets shot aren't responsible. The inventors of chess aren't responsible. The game and its creators are absolutely not at fault here.

Every other organ in our body gets sympathy and respect and 🤬🤬🤬’s and Caring Bridges & shares except the brain. It’s so baffling that we’ve made it so far as a society and still deny support to the one human biological family of conditions that personally touch more of us than not, at some point in our lives.. My own thoughts only, speaking from someone who is a complex mental illness sufferer, but his fathers reluctance to accept the reality of the situation and his drastic appearance changes over the years could all be manifestations is his own ME. His mother seemed to be at her wits end and the males fought the good fight against her. Not saying she wasnt a participant in the household cyclone but I read somewhere he is said to have despised his mother.. all my speculation.

As a general rule, yes.
I was telling my friend about your conjecture and inflammatory posts today and how often it’s a nice (uncomfortable) laugh in the middle of really dark content. So there’s that. That’s basically the end of the story but I see you like attention so I figured you coming up at happy hour would soothe your spirit for a while ;)

My daughter once went out with a man for a short time who talked about hating his mother all the time. I was really worried about the relationship. He also seemed to reject me. He never ate a meal that I cooked, even though he was in our house at mealtimes.
She got rid of him pretty quickly when he started to criticise her female friends that she had grown up with. Not just criticise them but call them all the names that men have for females.

No, that is not true. Many, many women work in offices, yet they live longer than men. Why is that?

Im glad he fizzeled out. Male anger toward their mothers and/or abandonment can have lifelong reprocussions socially and even sexually. My great grandmother first told me tht how a man treats his mother is how he will treat you. They had this figured out way back when apparently.

Everyone has some weight to carry, but for him, it was a day of reckoning to confront the burden of himself

He and Lanza have a very similar appearance. Something happens to the eyes. Holmes had strange eyes as well. What is that all about?

i have seen it a lot (on inpt units!)

if ya think about it it kinda resembles the emptiness inside

in some instances , as i evolved ,you could get to the point where you could tell by their eyes they were escalating

then you talk quieter slower

and keep the conversation on one thing only !!

soothing stuff

"do you think things might calm down for you if we go over to the seclusion room ? I will stay with you - everything is ok .

again it took time to develop but I got to a place if they knew me I could get them to walk over to the seclusion room by themselves (instead of being taken down which is awful )

Do have to let the techs know tho - in case they explode !!!!!!!!!!!

In Howard County, parents of Jacksonville shooting suspect had been desperate to find psychiatric care for son

In Howard County, parents of Jacksonville shooting suspect had been desperate to find psychiatric care for son

As someone who has been an avid gamer for over 30 years, it saddens me that there are people, once again, looking to blame video-games for these kind of violent incidents. This event was Madden NFL prelim tournament, good old American football game competition. Even if it had been an action FPS or fighting/martial arts game tournament, it still really would not have had any relevance towards what happened.

This is a graphic of what kind of controllers gamers have typically used over the past few decades:

https://wh1k8zidop.inscname.net/games/images/1461010286_Video_Game_Controllers_Click

You push a few buttons or triggers, or move a joystick to move your character or a corresponding cursor or target on the screen. It's nothing like holding or using a real fire-arm. I don't know where that misconception came from. Even in the video arcades, where sometimes they use light guns for games like Time Crisis 5 or Big Buck Wild, it's like holding a huge empty plastic water gun. On the PC you often use your mouse and keyboard to play. In fact it's often the best for first person shooter games because of better precision.

Here is an interview with a survivor who questions the current motive being speculated about. He is one of the two people who beat Katz in the tournament over the weekend. He and the other person whom Katz lost to were not targeted in the shooting. So it's doubtful that it was simply a rage killing over his tournament elimination.

SM chatter is that Bread (Katz) had a longstanding rivalry with Trueboy and another gamer called Young Kiv . The latter had left the venue earlier, fortunately. It's far more likely this was premeditated and Trueboy and Young Kiv were the intended main victims, in my opinion, but this is not confirmed and should be taken as rumor only.

The players who compete in these tournaments can earn a decent living if they are competitive. Here is a breakdown of Madden Esports prize pools from 2017. You will note that Trueboy was a top ten earner, making $30,000 for that year, doing something he loved. He and Spotme were bright young men with bright futures cruelly cut short.

At least the gaming community is rallying around their devastated families and those survivors of the shooting who had to endure this terrible ordeal.

This last part of the article is quotable as a reminder of how big this entertainment industry is now:

Mike Morhaime, the CEO of Blizzard Entertainment, an American video games developer, told a recent International Olympic Committee forum that esports has 2 billion people worldwide playing electronic games, with 380 million watching esports.

To get an idea of just how big the interactive videogame industry is becoming globally, here is an article with some statistics. There are rumblings elsewhere that in terms of global revenue, videogame earnings outstrip the film and music industries combined. There's some debate over the methodology of what is included however (i.e. dvd sales or streaming?) so I'll just stick to this link :

Global Games Market Revenues 2018 | Per Region & Segment | Newzoo

I guess what I am trying to say is that video gaming is becoming as big as TV, films and music. Video-games are on our mobile phones, personal computers, consoles and other devices. In terms of an entertainment industry, it's a global juggernaut and only growing in terms of market revenue/participants and spectators.

Being an E-Sports athlete is now a viable respectable career choice, especially if you can land some lucrative sponsorship deals while competing in the high profile events. You can even take courses at some universities to become a professional.

It's possible that Katz' mentality was more akin to a disgruntled employee, angry at missing out on a job promotion he'd been counting on, resentful of certain other employees who were rising faster than he was. Undeserving of their popularity (in his mind). JMO, but it wasn't a spontaneous rage killing "over losing a video game" (in the same way as a road-rage incident can escalate to violence), it meant a lot more than that and was likely pre-meditated. If that makes sense.

Judging by the more recent articles which go into more details as to Katz' mental health problems and violent tendencies, it would appear that video-games had become an essential part of his identity and livelihood to the point of warping his priorities. That he would call the police to complain about his games being taken away by his mother, or punch his hand through a wall because he couldn't get to them is extreme. I get the sense that the mother did what she could to regulate his behavior, but that the father disagreed with her methods of managing both sons' behavioral/mental issues, which is why the divorce was so long and contentious. It does appear, however, that they did seek psychiatric help and treatment for him to some extent and were aware of his struggles but unable to turn the situation around in terms of the severity of his problems. It also would have become more difficult to insist on treatment options once he became an adult.

It's just tragic all around.

I'd like to end with this article which made me tear up a bit. It's important to keep a focus on the victims and the loss to their families and their communities.

unhealthy pallor, mental disorder, not getting enough fresh air, sunlight and healthy food and proper exercise.

It's not uncommon for children to call the police because a parent, usually the mother, has confiscated something like a phone, punished them in some way, not let them go out or demanded that they do their homework/chores.

“Not uncommon?”

Then how common is it, really? Maybe it’s occasional if it’s not exactly a rare occurrence?

Serious question. It’s rare enough that when it does happen, it’s often newsworthy.

Of the dozens/hundreds of parents I interact with, or that either of my parents interacted with during their 40 years of teaching, I know of no actual incidences of kids calling cops for the reasons you suggest.

Link, please? Tia

Imo only

It has been strange how the thread got all into gaming in that light. My thing initially was do the controllers resmelbe controllers for machine gun playing.

The "people" doing it have nothing to so with anything .

He was disturbed and he played games.

German Air was disturbed and a pilot

Horizon air disturbed and worked at an airport

The main deal is mental illness + = mass shooting
