Identified! FL - Pinellas Co., Wht/HispMale 715UMFL, 30-40, glass eye, Mar'81 - Jack Lachow

  • #21
It could be that he lost the eye in prison and that's why there was damage to face also. I had a neighbor that lived next to us for about 2 years in Dunedin (20 miles from St Pete) that had a glass eye. I saw him last in 1982-83 so it's not him. Anyways, I was more friends with his wife and she had told me that her dh had lost his eye in a fight in prison and they also shattered small bones around his eye socket and nose.

Its strange that doe network says the pants where from England or the bahama's because that brand sounds so familiar, maybe they sold them in the US shortly after that time period. I worked at JC Pennys in 83 and it sounds so familiar the brand.

Corroborated by a permission error on NAMUS. I wish we had details!

:banghead: Yeah, that is pretty important. Well at least there is another possible match to any current/future glass eye UID's.

:offtopic:John Edward Parks is another missing man with a glass eye, who I added to NamUs last year but he still hasn't been published yet. He's the first person that I thought of when I saw the title, but his vital statistics and timing of his disappearance don't match up. Also, his right eye is glass and, like Billy Marshall, John Parks also has blue eyes.

I would be interesting to know if the man found near St. Petersburg was never reported missing or if he was reported and that he had a glass eye was somehow omitted.

Per Doe Network He was identified at an unknown time. In the "closed cases" index, there is no mention of his case or who he was identified as. Maybe the notice was made by mistake.

Case History
The victim was located in thick mangroves at the end of a dirt road in the area of Fourth Street N and 115th Avenue, in St. Petersburg, Florida on March 13, 1981. His knee was protruding from the dirt. Investigators figured this man had been buried for three to seven days.

This was the second body found over a three-week period in the winter of 1981. Their bodies were discovered by fishermen, about 3 miles apart. One was buried in a shallow grave, the other tossed in Tampa Bay with a barbell tied to his feet. Both men died of gunshot wounds to the head or neck. Neither body held many clues. No identification cards were found. Both men may have been killed somewhere else, then dumped here. Perhaps by the same person. The first man was identified as a Tampa carnival worker in 2003.

Detectives consulted optometry organizations. Over the years, they found more than two dozen missing persons reports involving people with glass eyes. None were their guy. They ran fingerprints through databases, but nothing matched. In 1983, investigators exhumed the body and used the skull to mold clay into a likeness of the dead man's face. Detectives plan to enter the man's DNA into a national missing person's database.

This says that it looked like the unidentified doe and the other victim (identified in 2003 as a carnival worker) may have been killed elsewhere and then disposed of in that area. The strange thing is there was another man found murdered in 1982 named Karl Condrad Hines who looks simular to the composite of the doe. He was found right on Gandy Beach on Southside. The doe on this thread was found partially buried in the mangroves right near the southside of Gandy Bridge. Makes me wonder if there was a serial killer and these are connected. Maybe the 2 in 1981 where also killed on Gandy Beach and then 1 was thrown in the water after his demise and the other (this doe) was placed over in the mangroves as an attempt to conceal his body. Just throwing that out there because I see some similarities.

Brand name St. Michael is Marks & Spencer's in the UK.

It's possible M&S was exporting to other countries (definitely not the US) in that time period, especially in former British colonies, commonwealth, etc.

St Michael was the brand name used by M&S from 1928 to 2000 when it was dropped.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Michael_(brand)

Virtually all St Michael clothes were made in the UK or Europe, but since then they've been manufactured mostly in the Indian subcontinent and the Far East (and the quality has gone down dramatically)..

From 1973 - 1999 M&S had stores across Canada, and from about 1975 - 1999 also in France and Belgium.
