POSSIBLE HUMAN REMAINS DISCOVERED AT RESIDENCE IN LAKE TROPICANA
Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Major Crimes detectives are currently investigating the discovery of possible human remains found at a residence located at 18760 SW 47 Street in Lake Tropicana. The couple who lived at the residence have been reported missing by their family, and detectives are investigating their disappearance.

On Sunday, January 6, 2019, MCSO deputies received a phone call from a family member requesting a well-being check on 75-year old Layton Underwood and his wife, 69-year old Donna Underwood. The reportee could not make contact with the couple and requested our assistance. When deputies arrived at the Underwood residence, the couple was not there. During the investigation, deputies found possible human remains on the property and they immediately requested additional crime scene assistance. MCSO Major Crimes detectives, MCSO forensic technicians, the Medical Examiner’s Office and the University of Florida C.A. Pound Lab responded and are actively conducting an in-depth investigation on the property. Investigators are in the process of recovering the remains and will then begin the identification process.

Detectives are also looking for the Underwood’s vehicle, which is missing from the residence. Their vehicle is a 2014 White VW Passat S bearing Florida tag GXRD85. It is believed that Allyn Shane Gilbert (DOB: 04/28/1965), a relative of the Underwood’s, may be driving this vehicle, and deputies are listing him as a Missing Endangered subject due to concerning statements he’s recently made. Detectives would like to make contact with Gilbert to speak to him about this incident. Mr. and Mrs. Underwood have also been listed as Missing Endangered by the MCSO.

If you have any information about this case or if you know Gilbert’s location, you are encouraged to contact Detective Aaron Levy at 352-368-3546. You can also contact the Marion County Crimestoppers at 352-368-STOP.

Missing Florida couple's car found in Nebraska

A relative is being questioned in the disappearance of a couple from central Florida.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office says Allyn Gilbert, once the subject of an alert for a missing and endangered person, is behind bars in Omaha. Police found him in possession of a car belonging to Layton and Donna Underwood.

[...]

Gilbert is being held in Nebraska on a Florida warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

He's being held at the Douglas County jail on a Marion County warrant on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. That charge stems from a Dec. 27 incident in which Gilbert fatally shot his cat because he said it was sick and he couldn't afford veterinary care. A deputy wrote in the report that Gilbert has an extensive criminal history, including a felony conviction on a robbery charge.

It's unclear if Gilbert is expected to face more charges.

Relative of missing Dunnellon-area couple detained in Nebraska

The Marion County Sheriff's Office on Monday announced that a relative of a couple from Dunnellon who are considered missing and endangered was found in Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday.

The agency also confirmed that the remains found at the home of the couple are human.

[...]

The arrest affidavit states that deputies went to the Underwood's home, at 18760 SW 47th St., in Dunnellon, on Dec. 27, 2018, on a well-being check for Gilbert after he shot a cat on the property. Gilbert told a sheriff's deputy that he killed his cat with a gun because it was ill and he could not afford veterinary care.

On Jan. 10, Detective John Lightle conducted a background check on Gilbert and found an "extensive criminal history," including a conviction for robbery out of the district court in Des Moines, Iowa, the report states.

Based on his admitting to having a firearm on Dec. 27, when Gilbert shot the cat, Lightle petitioned that he be held with no bond in Omaha, according to the affidavit.

It was not immediately clear when Gilbert might be transported back to Marion County.

Allyn Gilbert waived extradition in Douglas County Court Tuesday morning. A public defender was appointed to represent him.
While the Underwoods officially remain on the Missing Endangered list, our sister station WCJB in Gainesville, reports that authorities in charge of the case there confirm the discovery of human remains that are in the process of being identified.

If you enter his name in Facebook search, he advertised (probably stolen) stuff in a FL Buy & Sell group on 5/6 January. The photos show he is (most probably) sitting in the stolen car. I hope LE didn’t miss that.
