Rapper YNW Melly murder trial opening statements set for Monday

The murder trial for up-and-coming rapper YNW Melly is set to begin on Monday after a jury of 12 was finalized this week.

Melly, whose legal name is Jamell Demons, faces two counts of murder for the 2018 shooting deaths of his group members Chris Thomas, 20, who was known as YNW Juvy, and Anthony Williams, 21, whose stage name was YNW Sakchaser.

A fourth member, Cortlen Henry known as YNW Bortlen, also faces murder charges. Police said Bortlen was driving the night of the murders and claimed they were the victims of a drive-by shooting. Bortlen will be tried separately.

Last week, a judge ruled in favor of the state after they filed a motion that would allow a death sentence if a jury voted 8-4 in favor of the death penalty. The new law was created after the Parkland school shooter, Nikolas Cruz, avoided the death penalty due to a split jury.

I didn’t watch much of this trial but tuning into the hearing video now and this is off the walls.

Does the prosecutor give any reason for why she didn’t show up to the hearing?
The Judge seemed rightfully angry at that alone before he called the recess and told them to figure out where she is/was and to get her to the courtroom.

I assume she had to have known about the hearing, but I’m not sure what argument could be made for why she did not show (if she didn’t have other hearings, etc which would seem unlikely being she’s the lead on this case, right?) JMOO

Welp, Bradley is out! Not surprised. Judge was really worried about the fact that she was on the defense witness list. He pretty much said he she would have to recuse herself for that reason.

NEW (ish) #YNWMelly team renewing their motion to dismiss the charges and to recuse the entire state attorneys' office (prosecution). Judge says he must set a separate hearing for that.
