"At one point, police were able to reach McDonald by the phone, but could not get him to return to the city or tell them where he was, police say. He was last possibly seen in the area of Brevard County around 8 p.m."

The intersection of State Road 518 and AIA is along the beach just over an hour from their home in Port St. Lucie. He left the home at 4:00pm and only went an hour north by 8:00pm. He answered his phone! That doesn't sound like he is panicking and running to me. I suspect there's more to this story.
