Circumstances of Disappearance

Powell was reported missing to the Escambia County Sheriff's Department on April 29, 1984. Officials at the time said they believed Powell had been murdered, but there were no strong leads, they said. Powell's body was never found. After new details surfaced in April 1989, the case was reopened. With help from the State Attorney's Office, investigators were able to secure an indictment without having Powell's body.
A man was arrested Saturday in Metairie, [Lousiana], in connection with a murder that occurred six years ago in Pensacola, Pensacola Police said. Ronald Harvey Fleming, 41, who listed his address as Pensacola, was charged with first-degree murder by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department
Police said that they believe that on the night Powell was murdered, Fleming picked her up at a local lounge and took her to the 900 Stanley Ave. residence where he was staying. While there, the couple argued, and Fleming shot Powell. After the shooting, Fleming is alleged to have disposed of Powell's body in the north end of Escambia County.
Claude Wilkins, a brother in the now-defunct Skull Munchers gang, told Pensacola police that he watched the murder in his own living room. Previously, Wilkins either had told officers that he knew nothing about the woman's death or he had misled them with vague tips.
