Missing former Stetson student could be in danger, police say

Miramar police are investigating the disappearance of a woman who was last seen around noon Sunday at her home in the 2000 block of Renaissance Boulevard.

According to a police flyer, Valentina Arango left her home in a blue 2015 Toyota Yaris with Florida tag Z01-AXB and arrived at Stetson University's Hatter Hall in DeLand around 5 p.m., the GPS on her cellphone showed.

University officials said Arango attended the school in spring but is not enrolled for the fall semester.

Police said the last transaction made on Arango's debit card occurred Sunday at a Sunoco gas station.

No one could verify to detectives that Arango was spotted at either Hatter Hall or the gas station Sunday, authorities said.

"At this time, Stetson is fully cooperating with law enforcement to assist them in their investigation and Stetson Public Safety remains on the lookout for her vehicle on campus," university officials said.

Police said Arango's mother last spoke with her daughter Tuesday and no one has heard from her since.

Her mother has a message for her daughter and said: "We're all concerned about you, Valentina. Please come home, please tell us you're OK or ... or send a message, something. If you're not able to, try to turn on that phone, try to do something so we can help you."

Detectives believe Arango might be in danger.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call Detective Nikki Fletcher at 954-602-4131 or email her at [email protected].

Police Searching for Missing Miramar Woman
Police are searching for a college student from Miramar who was last seen before she left for school in DeLand.

Miramar police said Valentina Arango left her home at noon Sunday and arrived at Stetson University Hatter Hall in DeLand at 5 p.m., according to the GPS on her cellphone. She left in a blue 2015 Toyota Yaris with Florida tag 201AXB.

[...]

Arango called her mother when she arrived at school and told her she was going to take a nap. Her mother called her later that night, but she didn't answer.

Her mother talked to her Monday morning and night, but since then, she hasn't heard anything from her daughter.

The last transaction Arango made on her credit card was made that same day at a Sunoco Gas Station in DeLand. Police said no one could verify her physically being at the gas station or university.

However, detectives said, no one could verify the student being at either location [Sunoco Gas Station or Hatter Hall] physically, and now her phone goes directly to voicemail.

Valentina’s family said phone records show she was checking her voicemail frequently, adding something just doesn’t sit right.

“Very often, very often, incredibly often, so it’s very weird,” said Elizabeth.

[...]

“Send a message, something, if you’re not able to,” said Elizabeth. “Try to turn on that phone. Try to do something, so we can help you.”

Investigators said they’re going to verify whether there is surveillance video of Valentina using her debit card at the gas station in DeLand.

Police investigate disappearance of Miramar woman
[...]

"I think my daughter is very gullible. She is a very good person, and she thinks everybody is good," Elizabeth Arango said, worried after telling Local 10 News she hasn't seen her daughter since this past Sunday.

[...]

"The thing that I didn't like is that instead of stopping at the dorm, she went further up," Elizabeth Arango said. "I don't know what she went to do there, and then she came back."

Elizabeth Arango said she last spoke with her daughter over the phone Tuesday. During the phone conversation, she said, Valentina Arango was whispering, saying she was in the library and couldn't speak out loud. Investigators later learned she wasn't being truthful because cameras never captured her on campus.

I'm so glad she was found safe and I hope she gets whatever help is needed. From the article:

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office on Sunday said deputies located Valentina Arango, who was located alone at a rest stop along I-275 on the north side of Sunshine Skyway Bridge at 12:14 p.m.

Arango was taken into protective custody for a mental health evaluation and was in good physical condition, deputies said.

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is a huge draw for suicides. There’s a live camera feed for that bridge, mainly for the weather. The rest areas on either end are frequently patrolled. I’m glad they found her and truly hope she gets the love and help she needs.
