"Death in the City of Light" is a new book written by David King. The subject is Dr Marcel Petiot who claimed to be a member of the French Resistance, and who lured as many as 150 refugees to their murder and dismemberment.
There are so many elements in this subject that are incredibly horrifying-Petiot was by all accounts charming, warm, witty and a lover of antiques. And yet he would force these refugees to give him money, write letters telling their families that they had sucessfully fled the Nazi occupation, and then he would kill them with lethal gas and dismember them.
He was eventually charged and executed for 27 murders, but the belief is that his body count is far higher.
Where would you start to try and name his victims? Thousands passed through Paris looking for a way out to South America or North America.
