The mother of a 7-year-old girl whose dead and decaying body was found barely hidden in an Atlanta-area closet over the weekend has been arrested and charged with her daughter’s murder, police said.

On Sunday evening, a DKPD officer found the corpse of a child in the closet to unit number 29 at the Hidden Valley Apartments on Misty Water Drive in Decatur – the county seat and part of the Atlanta metro area – in response to a mysterious and macabre phone call.

“The comments on the call stated a 8-10 year old juvenile was deceased in the closet,” the DKPD incident report obtained by Law&Crime said. “The complainant did not give any further details and called from a disconnected cell phone.”

A neighbor told the responding officer that a former tenant moved out “a couple of months” ago and that she had not seen her since then, the police report goes on to say.

“I checked the location and observed what appeared to be a juvenile female (approximately 2-4 years of age) deceased in the closet,” the officer wrote in the report. “I observed what appeared to be a full head of hair and decayed flesh that was in the form of an arm and leg.”

Alondra Hobbs, 27, was taken into custody Thursday on charges of felony murder and second-degree cruelty to children in the death of her daughter, Alivia Hobbs-Jordan. In announcing the arrest, police did not disclose how the child died or what may have preceded her death.

They have not accused her mother of malice murder, which would imply deliberate intention to take the girl’s life. A search of court records showed it was not Hobbs’ first alleged offense.

According to a police report, around 9 p.m. Sunday, someone called investigators to the Hidden Valley Apartments south of Decatur to report seeing a child’s body in the closet of unit 27, then promptly disconnected the cellphone number. The apartment had been vacant for many months, the next-door neighbor told police, but other neighbors said there had been a history of squatters.

Inside a closet, an officer made the grisly discovery. Only visible was a full head of hair, an arm and a leg of what appeared to be a much younger child, the officer said in the report. While her age had not been confirmed at that point, the officer guessed she must have been between 2 and 4 years old.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - The mother of a 7-year-old girl whose body was found in the closet of a vacant DeKalb County apartment made her first appearance in court Wednesday.

Due to the nature of the charges, the judge was required to transfer Hobbs' case to the Superior Court. She will remain in custody until the Superior Court judge determines whether she will receive a bond.

DeKalb County Police have not released the official cause of death for the little girl.
