A Dallas law partner and SMU law professor has been reported missing while hiking the Appalachian Trail in Georgia.

The Union County Sheriff's Office said Charles Hosch, a 67-year-old Dallas lawyer, is missing.

Hosch was last seen at the Byron Herbert Reece Trailhead, a hiking path along the Appalachian Trail by Blood Mountain in Georgia. When he was seen, he was wearing khaki pants, a camel color sweater and a dark green jacket.

Anyone with information on Hosch's whereabouts should call the Union County Emergency Operations Center at 706-439-6091.

I saw this linked earlier in my FB feed, one of my friends knows the family (I don't, at all). They did comment he was quite familiar with the area and an avid hiker.

An ongoing effort to locate Hosch includes dozens of trained officers, specialized K-9 units, aerial support, and advanced tracking technology.

The longtime Dallas lawyer grew up in Georgia and has an "intimate knowledge of these mountain trails he has hiked throughout his life," according to his partner at Hosch & Morris.

He knows these woods and loves them, and we are working with the sheriff’s office to find him,” his daughter said on Facebook

MOO To me he looks really sad in the newest picture released to show the clothing he was wearing when he went missing. He looks contemplative. He doesn't look like he was about to go hiking but moreso wandering slowly while thinking. No sign of any water or gear. Hands in pockets. MOO

Ps i realize this is just one still likely from video so maybe the full video would give a different vibe.

Time is critical in these situations,” said a representative of the sheriff’s office, who added that weather conditions and mountainous terrain complicate the efforts.

The sheriff’s office said updates will be provided as more information becomes available. LE continues working to determine his route and last known activity before he entered the wooded area.

Taking his age into consideration we should be concerned with possibility of a medical event happening on the trail, or onset of Alzheimer disease or other form of dementia. One of the earlier symptoms are sudden bouts of confusion. During them the sufferer can get lost even in very well known place.

I picked up on that too, but it might just be angle and timing. He lives in Dallas? Was he home visiting in Georgia?

I first found the clothes not what I'd expect for hiking, and he has no gear or even a small pack with him. But in looking up the trailhead he was parked at, it's a 4 mile out and back trail, pretty much a "stroll" for an experienced outdoorsperson. I don't see him continuing on beyond that without gear, and wonder too, about a medical event. Blood Mountain via Byron Reece Trail

If he has not been found in 4 days on a 4 mile out and back, he has strayed somewhere. IMO. Wonder if he was on any medication- I also notice that the police request info from anyone who saw him or his vehicle- does that mean the vehicle is missing/ not in the parking area they think he left from?

Union County Sheriff Shawn Dyer said Hosch planned to hike to the top of Blood Mountain and return to his vehicle, but may have been exposed to freezing temperatures overnight.

They have found indications from some of the K9s of points where my dad was on the trail, which is really hopeful,” said daughter

The hiker’s account confirmed to the family that Hosch made it to the summit, something they weren’t sure of because “he wasn't really wearing proper hiking shoes.” When asked about her dad chatting with a stranger at the top of the mountain, Julia laughed.
“That is the most in-character thing about my dad that could have possibly happened,” Julia said.
