Officials looking for missing teen with autism in Jekyll Island

Brunswick PD is asking for the community’s help in locating a missing teen.

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. — Brunswick Police Department is asking for the community’s help in locating a missing teen.

Brunswick PD has put out a missing child alert for 16-year-old Conner Mathis. Georgia State Patrol and Jekyll Island Fire Department have been looking since Monday. He was last seen at Camp Jekyll.

Conner is high-functioning autistic and is described as being of African American descent, has short hair and wears braces. He stands at 5 feet, six inches and weighs 140 pounds. Police believe he could be wearing red shorts with a black T-shirt.

GSP is asking residents to check around their homes, as it believes Conner may be afraid, confused and looking for shelter.

Anyone with information that can assist in helping locate Conner is asked to call 911. Callers should let the dispatcher know that they have information on the missing child from Camp Jekyll.

Authorities said he has Autism Spectrum Disorder and is considered “high-functioning.”

Social media posts said Connor was last seen at Camp Jekyll around 3:30 p.m. when his group was playing volleyball in front of the 4-H Center. It was noticed that he was missing around 5 p.m. when he did not show up for dinner, and the Georgia State Patrol was called around 6 p.m.

His peers said he told them he wanted to go to the beach, so the search has been heavily focused on the beach area and the dunes.

According to a report from The Brunswick News, Connor is from Brunswick and attends Glynn Academy. He was attending a 4-H Camp on Jekyll Island.

The man who located the body of a missing teen off Jekyll Island Tuesday afternoon had been searching for more than three hours when he spotted something strange.

Capt. Andy Jones was part of a search party of nearly a dozen boats, including Georgia DNR, the U.S. Coast Guard and Georgia State Patrol. He was piloting past a spot he'd already passed about eight times when he saw the mink.

“It's a very unique situation,” said Jones, a former volunteer firefighter and eighth generation St. Simons Island native. “I've never seen a mink cross the beach, cross the white sand and everything. You might see those around the creeks or the docks or something like that, but never one out at the beach. And I was looking at that mink, and within five seconds of seeing that mink, I spotted Connor, in the surf.”

Jones spotted the teen at around 1:15 p.m., and summoned DNR, whose boat arrived “probably in less than a minute.” He says the ranger pulled his boat on shore, “saw the situation, threw an anchor out, took off his service belt and his radio, and sailed off the boat [into the water] to get to him. I was impressed with the response from the Georgia DNR today.”
