South Georgia deputies are searching for a missing mother. 44-year-old Marlena Hurst has not been seen or heard from in 17 days.

[...]

Hurst’s family say Marlena has struggled with substance abuse and would sometimes disappear for a day or two, but disappearing for more than two weeks is something that has never happened before.

Hurst was was last seen walking away from her family’s property on Stage Road in Meigs.

[...]

Hurst usually wears her red hair in a bun with a hat, long sleeve shirts, pants and Georgia boots.

[...]

The agency told WCTV that they are not ruling anything out at this time.

Sightings have been reported from Meigs to Cocoa Beach, Florida, but none of the individuals thought to be the missing Marlena Hurst turned out to be the woman.

Thomas County Sheriff's Office investigators have talked to people who thought they saw Hurst and viewed video from a store in another city where she was thought to have been — all to no avail.

The 44-year-old woman lived in a camper on family property on Stage Road.

"She left her phone at the residence, and no one has seen her," said Capt. Tim Watkins, sheriff's office chief investigator.

Concern voiced about missing woman, no response to reward

Investigators thought offering a $500 reward in a missing person case might lead to information, but there have been no takers.

Marlena Dawn Hurst was reported missing Dec. 13 by her daughter. Reported sightings of Hurst have not panned out.

"We're concerned that it's more than she did not want to have contact with her family," said Capt. Tim Watkins, Thomas County Sheriff's Office chief investigator.

Reported sightings were at gasoline stations in Meigs, Ochlocknee and Woodville, Florida.

Investigators are conducting more follow-up interviews with people who were in contact with Hurst before she was reported missing.

PH said she and her mother became a little distant as Hurst battled with addiction, and PH moved to stop enabling her. After not hearing from her mother for a few days, it didn’t immediately raise any red flags.

“It wasn’t uncommon for my mother to not call me for a week, two weeks, sometimes a month at a time,” she said.

According to Captain Tim Watkins with the Thomas County Sheriff’s office, tips have been flooding in since Hurst’s disappearance. Unfortunately, none of those tips have actually led to any concrete evidence in the case. Watkins said alleged sightings of Hurst have been reported in Tallahassee and even Colquitt County, but resources in those areas have not been successful finding her.

What we do know is Marlena was involved an argument with a relative shortly before she vanished. According to PH Hurst was last seen by her grandmother leaving her camper.

Search for missing woman spans four counties

April 12
A local lawman is frustrated that a Thomas County woman missing for more than five months has not been found, despite many interviews and following every lead.

“We’ve interviewed people in four counties who thought they saw her in Grady, Mitchell, Colquitt and Thomas counties,” said Capt. Tim Watkins, Thomas County Sheriff’s office chief investigator.

The sheriff’s office received word Hurst possibly was in Tallahassee. U.S. marshals did not find her there.

Another report put her in south Leon County, Florida.

“She wasn’t there,” Watkins said. “We heard she was in Port St. Joe. She wasn’t there, either,” he said.

Watkins said investigators have conducted close to 80 interviews.

“I think we’ve just about exhausted all the leads we have.”

Possibly?
“Our crime scene, along with the GBI crime scene, worked Saturday evening until it got too dark to process. We secured the scene then on Sunday went back and finished completely exhuming what we could of the skeleton.,” said Captain Steve Jones with TCSO.

Along with Capt. Jones, Captain Tim Watkins shared an update on the investigation, saying it appears the remains had been there for about a year. He then referenced one of the most recent missing person cases in Thomas County, Marlena Hurst.

Watkins said this projected timeframe of Hurts’ disappearance and the decomposition of the remains found lessens the chances that they belong to Hurst, however, officials said they’re not ruling anything out.

“This possibly is going to be a multi-county investigation. Like I alluded to earlier, there are several missing person cases around the region and without positive identification, we don’t want to say anything prematurely,” said Jones.

According to TCSO, about 98% of the skeleton was recovered from the wooded area. The remains will be checked against dental records which Watkins said would be the easiest way to identify the body.

Capt. Watkin said that he does not believe the remains found belong to Hurst or Travis based on the timeframe the remains were estimated to have been in the woods, and the timing of their disappearances.

However, Sgt. Lindsay said that MPD can’t provide closure to it’s community just yet.

Capt. Watkins said that he’s just waiting on the results from the state anthropologist to finalize the identity of the remains, which will hopefully provide answers to someone’s family very soon.

I'm still hoping for some closure for this family but I highly doubt the remains are hers. Given the time since she went missing and the temperatures this time of year it's doubtful that the remains would be in their current condition.
