COVINGTON, Ga. - Authorities continue to search for a missing man who disappeared shortly before a house fire in Newton County.

According to the Newton County Sheriff's Department, Melvin Cooksey has been missing since Feb. 23.

Deputies say that was the day they responded to a fire at a home on the 1400 block of Mote Road in Covington. Witnesses say that they saw a white hatchback vehicle leave the scene shortly before the fire. The vehicle's make and model are unknown.

Since then, Cooksey's family and friends have not seen or heard from him, and they are concerned about his wellbeing.

Deputies say the missing man is paralyzed on his left side.

If you have seen Cooskey or possibly know his location, call investigators at 678-625-1429 or by dialing 911.

New development

On Tuesday morning, the Sheriff's Office released several photos of the car believed to have been involved and new information.

Although a license plate can clearly been seen on the car, the Sheriff's Office says that tag was stolen. It is believed that a man and woman were in the vehicle when it left Cooksey's neighborhood.

A lot of stuff in the back of the car. Wondering if they robbed him before the fire, or if they are living in their car.

Thank you for the update @Unalienable Rights

Just last evening I was searching for updates in his case. Poor Mr Cooksey, I am so sorry that this was the outcome, but very thankful that an arrest has already been made. He seemed like such a nice and fun gentleman. My condolences to his loved ones. :(

Why does the title say "presumed located", isn't that usually for people found alive?

no I think it's also for when the NamUS/LE postings get taken down or cancelled with no further elaboration

I feel like the news article is saying that Cooksey is deceased because the suspect was charged with murder. I think the usual tag for this type of situation is "deceased/not located". I was hopeful he had been found alive, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

the thread got this tag around June 10th, when the official missing persons posts were removed without any explanation. This update came after the original "presumed located" tag was applied.

I was looking for updates in this case but couldn’t find any news since DK’s arrest. I found a single article from that time that says that Mr Cooksey was “eventually found dead inside his burned-down home in Covington, Ga”. I couldn’t find this information anywhere else, though.
